I am able to reproduce this easily on krillin using image 16. However thumbnails are generated correctly in the gallery on mako, so I don't believe the issue is related to the gallery app itself but rather something on the system. Also, I don't think it's a gstreamer related issue, as the thumbail is correctly displayed in the video scope so if it was a gstreamer issue it would fail there as well.
It could be a security/apparmor related issue. I see these DENIALS in /var/log/syslog when launching the gallery when there are video thumbnails: Sep 4 23:28:54 ubuntu-phablet kernel: [ 8210.366923] (1)[2347:gallery-app]type=1400 audit(1409887734.744:487): apparmor="DENIED" operation="chmod" profile="com.ubuntu.gallery_gallery_2.9.1.1049" name="/run/user/32011/" pid=2347 comm="gallery-app" requested_mask="w" denied_mask="w" fsuid=32011 ouid=32011 Sep 4 23:28:56 ubuntu-phablet kernel: [ 8212.259456] (2)[2612:CodecLooper]type=1400 audit(1409887736.644:488): apparmor="DENIED" operation="open" profile="com.ubuntu.gallery_gallery_2.9.1.1049" name="/android/system/etc/mtk_omx_core.cfg" pid=2612 comm="CodecLooper" requested_mask="r" denied_mask="r" fsuid=32011 ouid=0 ** Also affects: apparmor-easyprof-ubuntu (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: apparmor-easyprof-ubuntu (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) => Jamie Strandboge (jdstrand) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to thumbnailer in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1365503 Title: Video thumbnails always fail in gallery-app Status in Gallery App: Invalid Status in “apparmor-easyprof-ubuntu” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: com.ubuntu.gallery 2.9.1.1049 Video thumbnails always fail to generate in the gallery app and the thumbnail crash with bug 1364475 or bug 1356331.
