I think I might have had the issue you described (crash when clearing hhistory 
from new tab view) I just assumed that clearing the history would close all 
tabs instead of realizing it was a crash. If I clear the history from a normal 
tab it does work.
If it's still of any use to you, i'm running ubuntu 15.04 (OTA-8) on a bq 
Aquaris E5

  Clear Browsing History does not clear top sites

Status in webbrowser-app package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  If I clear the browsing history by going to 'Privacy & Permissions'
  and choosing 'Clear Browsing History' visited sites still show up in
  the Top Sites view when opening a new tab.
