Also happened to me when attempting to upgrade from ubuntu mate 12.04 to 12.10 for Raspberry Pi2. Tried also to install 12.10 image to formatted micro sd (twice) but upon first booting, could not get any image on monitor. Went back to fresh image of 12.04 and tried upgrading to 12.10 again and that failed with same error as has already been report. Not clear on how to recover or whether I need to return to 12.04 until a fix is found.
