Okay, I just saw it after opening another tab and browsing to gatherer.wizards.com. The search box didn’t initially appear to have focus, as there was no blinking caret in it, but typing text showed that it did have focus, as characters were entered, after the placeholder text, instead of replacing it. It looks like it could be a focus issue: if I press e.g. Ctrl+L to focus the address bar, then the placeholder text disappears, and the caret appears.
