I also have a system which I thought could not be upgraded beyond 12.04 because of a lack of PAE support, but then I recently found that many Pentium M CPUs can work with a PAE kernel, but do not advertise PAE support.

I understand the GUI works well and has been introduced into Saucy Salamander and later versions, but Modem Manager versions 0.6 or later has not yet been made available for 12.04 LTS users which enables its SMS functions etc to work. It is hoped that an updated version of Modem Manager that addresses this and other bug fixes can be introduced into 12.04 LTS very soon for users like myself who have been looking out patiently for a couple of years for this functionality.
