Is there really a major difference that prevents optimizing directories in an online mode while files are possible? Hm, then I have to find another solution (moving the content from an automated script is too unsecure for my purpose).

Maybe e4defrag can support this option too if this action can be performed on a read/write mounted device which would have the advantage that no read- only remounting and a filesystem check is needed for the optimizing process.
