Public bug reported: I'm using Ubuntu 14.10 dev with e2fsprogs 1.42.10-1.1ubuntu1 and e2fsck provides the option -D to optimize directories but in my opinion this is an option that would be more suitable in e4defrag (except that e2fsck also supports ext2 and ext3). Maybe e4defrag can support this option too if this action can be performed on a read/write mounted device which would have the advantage that no read-only remounting and a filesystem check is needed for the optimizing process.
