The GNS/ alternate distributed DNS thing is the bit I was specifically referring to. I do share your assessment that Gnunet does not provide anything like adequate anonymity.
GnuNet's GNS could be (I assume) run across TOR or I2P - this is what might be interesting to explore (for someone who wants to get their configuration and thinking hats on).
