  They're licensing content from various third-parties, and to get a
better deal (or any deal at all), they're enforcing location
restrictions.  Though they shouldn't bother doing it for people who are
paying by credit card, and if anyone *really* wants to bypass location
restrictions, getting a VPS and setting up their own private VPN is
simple and costs maybe five bucks a month.
