I disagree about modest hardware. Anything Java (Freenet, ip2, etc.) reliably craps out after a few weeks of operation on lean but usable hardware (~2 GBytes RAM effectively, dual-core Atom). It's okay for fat desktops which run for maybe a few weeks.
