As of today I'm the new operator of the directory authority gabelmoo. Karsten Loesing, who has been operating it since early 2008, decided to focus more on software development and less on the sysadmin overhead that running a directory authority implies. He handed over all the necessary keys to me, and his access to the gabelmoo host has been suspended. Directory authorities are special Tor relays which are responsible for generating a list of the currently running relays in the network once an hour. There are currently 8 directory authorities, operated by Tor developers and other individuals trusted by the Tor Project.
