Purely livecd's can write to other storage though. I've used tails day to day when traveling with an encrypted fs on usb storage just fine. Tails also offers the ability to install to another storage device. However, the more choices the better. Tails is a fine solution. Others may like The Haven Project or Pirate Linux. Good luck.
