1. Sattvic Food (Mode of Goodness)
Sattvic food promotes longevity, virtue, strength, health, happiness, and
satisfaction. These foods are described as juicy, succulent, nourishing,
and naturally tasty.
- Examples: Fresh fruits, green leafy vegetables, tubers, whole grains
(rice, wheat, barley), pulses/dals, nuts, seeds, milk, and ghee.
- Characteristics: Light on digestion, fresh, and wholesome.
2. Rajasic Food (Mode of Passion)
Rajasic food is characterized by intense tastes that are too bitter, sour,
salty, pungent, dry, or burning. These foods create excitement but lead to
pain, grief, and disease.
- Examples: Excessive spices, chilies, peppers, sour foods,, strong
tea/coffee, refined flour, deep-fried items, and sometimes onion and garlic.
- Characteristics: Stimulating, causing restlessness in the mind.
3. Tamasic Food (Mode of Ignorance)
Tamasic food causes laziness, dullness, and ignorance. It is described as
stale, tasteless, putrid, rotten, or leftovers.
- Examples: Meat, fish, eggs, alcohol, processed/fast food, heavily
fried food, and items that are not fresh.
- Characteristics: Causes lethargy and reduces energy. B G 17 8-10
