Seeking forgiveness, Bhoothaganasperformed penance and worshipped Lord Perumal, who guided them to bathe inAdisesha Theertha and pray to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva forgave them, and ingratitude, the Bhutaganas constructed temples for Perumal, Lord Shiva(Bhutapureeswarar), and Jayabhutha Vinayagar under a sacred tree. This sthala purana is in the form ofbas-relief on the pillars and ceiling. Dakshinamurthy was alsoworshipped by two Rishis. History and inscriptions This place was mentioned as Bhutapuri in the Skanda Purana. It is believed that the original temple wasbuilt during the Pallava period (Parameswara Varman) and extended by the Cholasand Vijayanagara. The adhisthana has 16th to 17th-century inscriptions, whichmeans the original temple might have been reconstructed. In nutshell the temple is believedto be 1000 years old.
