Introduction

The most prominent Shiva temple in Sriperumbudur is theancient Sri 
Bhutapureeswarar Temple located near the bus terminus.

 This temple is over1,500 years old, dedicated to Lord Shiva as 
Bhutapureeswarar and Goddess Shaktias Soundaravalli Ambal. 

Key Details aboutBhutapureeswarar Temple:

Significance: It is considered an ancient temple, believed tohave been built by 
the Bootha Ganas (Lord Shiva's army).

Deities: The main shrine is for Lord Shiva, with a separateshrine for 
Soundaravalli Ambal.

Location: Situated in the heart of Sriperumbudur, close tothe bus stand, making 
it easily accessible. 

 This temple atSriperumbudur is on the Chennai – Bangalore / Mumbai National 
Highway. Thisplace was called Bhutapuri during the Puranic period.

Legend

It is believed that this temple was constructed by by Bhutaganas ( During the 
process of Dancing, Lord Shiva’s dress got disturbed. Onseeing that, the Bhuta 
Ganas laughed at Lord Shiva. So Lord Shiva, as Rudraordered/cursed them to 
leave Kailash. Seeking forgiveness, Bhoothaganasperformed penance and 
worshipped Lord Perumal, who guided them to bathe inAdisesha Theertha and pray 
to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva forgave them, and ingratitude, the Bhutaganas 
constructed temples for Perumal, Lord Shiva(Bhutapureeswarar), and Jayabhutha 
Vinayagar under a sacred tree.

 This sthala purana is in the form ofbas-relief on the pillars and ceiling. 
Dakshinamurthy was alsoworshipped by two Rishis.

History and inscriptions

This place was mentioned as Bhutapuri in the Skanda Purana.  It is believed 
that the original temple wasbuilt during the Pallava period (Parameswara 
Varman) and extended by the Cholasand Vijayanagara. 

The adhisthana has 16th to 17th-century inscriptions, whichmeans the original 
temple might have been reconstructed. In nutshell the temple is believedto be 
1000 years old. 

Maha Kumbhabhishekam wasconducted in the years 1992 and 2009.   

Architecture

The temple faces East.  Balipeetam, Dwajasthambam, and Rishabam are infront. 
Since the main entranceto the shrine is from the South, a Jala is provided on 
the east side wall.Moolavar is in the sanctum sanctorum.

The Temple consists of Sanctum Sanctorum, antarala and arthamandapam. Stucco 
images of Lord Shiva and Parvati with Vinayaka and Murugan areon the top of 
both sides of the entrance mandapam.

Consort    : SriSoundaravalli

Ambal Sri Soundaravalli is in a separate sannidhi / temple onthe left side of 
Moolavar, also faces east like Moolavar. Stucco Dwarapalakasare at the entrance 
of the sanctum sanctorum.

Ambal temple is on the left side of the Moolavar and facesthe same direction, 
hence it is considered as Arthanareeswarar form.

 In koshtam MahaGanapathi, Dakshinamurthy (as Medha Dakshinamurthy), Maha 
Vishnu, Brahma, andDurgai. 

In the prakaram, Nagars and Putramman (Ant Hill Amman) areunder a peepal tree 
on the left side of the East side entrance. 

Vara Siddhi Vinayagar, mandapam with Nataraja’s stucco image,Sri Valli, 
Devasena Subramaniar, Anjaneyar, Chandikeswarar, and Navagrahas arealso there.

Special poojas are conducted on Maha Shivaratri days,Pradosham with Lord Shiva 
and Ambal procession (3 times) in the Prahara., 

Vinayaka Chathurthi, Deepavali, Karthigai Deepam, Navaratriin the month 
Purattasi  (October –November), Thai Poosam, Fridays in the month Thai 
(January), 10 days PanguniUthram a Brahmotsavam (March – April), Aadi Pooram, 
Valaikappu Vizha to Ambal,Special Abhishekas on Thursdays for Medha/Gnana 
Dakshinamurthy, Arudra Darshanin the month Aippasi, Pavithrotsavam, Masi Magam 
and Tamil New year day.

Temple timings

The temple will be kept open from 06.30 hrs. to 11.30 hrs. to11.30 hrs and from 
16.30 hrs. to 20.30 hrs.

Belief

It is believed that separated couples will reunite, relievedfrom the difference 
of opinions, if worshipped on Somavaram & Pradoshamdays, after doing Abhisheka 
and offering Vastara to Lord Shiva and Ambal.Devotees also pray to Ambal for 
the Child's boon and to get relief frommarriage obstacles.

This temple is also believed to be the Parihara Sthalam for the Rahu and Ketu 
doshas.

How to reach

Sriperumbudur is on the Chennai to Bangalore National Highway/ Mumbai Highway, 
and the temple is about 200 meters off the highway.

The temple is about 19 km from Thiruvallur, 34 km fromKanchipuram, and 55 km 
from Chennai.

The nearest Railway Station is Thiruvallur.
