History

The ancient Shivalinga housed in this temple has a historicalconnection dating
back to Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja, also known as the Lion ofKerala. Legend
suggests that this sacred Shivalinga was entrusted to KavumkaraIllam following
the demolition of Pazhassi's Palace and Kovilakam by theBritish.

Slightly different Version- Historically controlled by 14Illams, the temple
came under the sole management of the Kavumkara Illamfollowing the invasion of
Tipu Sultan, the aggressive ruler of Mysore, whichdisplaced prominent local
families. Financial decline and mismanagementeventually led to the temple's
ruin and closure. The local community, believingtheir prosperity and peace were
tied to the temple's divine presence, soughtpermission from Sri. Kuberan
Namboothiripad of the Kavumkara family to reopenthe temple. They formed the
"Ramapuram Sri Siva Vishnu Kshethra Seva Samithi,"a registered committee under
the Societies Act. In March 2006, an astrologicalenquiry called "Swarna
Prasnam" was conducted at the temple. The Swarna Prasnam revealed thatLord Sri
Rama had visited the temple during the Treta Yuga, givingthe place its name,
Ramapuram.
