Warm Greetings on this Deepavali Day - 2025
[image: Ayodhya-Deepotsav-2025]

Dear Rajaram Ji,

Greetings from Hindu University of America on the auspicious occasion of
Deepavali, a celebration of Light — both Inner and Outer, that honors the
victory of truth, love, and wisdom over ego, greed, and delusion. As we
celebrate this festival, I wish you all peace, prosperity, new energy, and
optimism as we look to the future. The lighting of lamps, the cleaning of
homes, and the exchange of sweets all signify the cleansing of the old and
the welcoming of the auspicious new – inviting new light into the space of
a stale darkness.

Darkness and Light have always co-existed, each battling to overcome the
other since time immemorial. Sometimes, it is darkness that is
overwhelming, and the pockets of light are few and far between. Sometimes,
perhaps more rarely, our lives are filled with light, with the darkness
being sparse and remote. In the United States of America, a Government
Shutdown, with no end in sight; the total breakdown of dialogue,
collaboration, and shared vision between the political parties; a polarized
society battling each other in the media, the courts and on the streets;
the normalization of an abuse and insult based political discourse; hiring
freezes, layoffs, and elevated inflation signaling an uncertain economic
future; a mental health and a gun violence epidemic raging in our civil
society; deteriorating relations between the generations; a war against
immigrants, illegal and legal; indiscriminate tariffs amounting to
whimsical economic bullying; a significant loss of trust between the USA
and India; shifting visa rules; frayed relations between longstanding
allies; a re-organization of international alliances, signaling a new era
of uncertainty; and prolonged wars in many parts of the world, wreaking
untold suffering on millions of people; all point to impending darkness
more than light.

If you feel that the balance between optimism and pessimism about the
future may be tilting towards pessimism for more people now than ever, my
sympathies are with you. I too feel the same. As we contemplate the future,
both our individual, personal futures and the future of our families,
communities, societies, and nations, indeed, the future of humanity itself,
are we filled with optimism and enthusiasm? Or do we see dark clouds on the
horizon, representing an uncertain future? Will we bequeath to future
generations a world that is more hopeful and filled with possibility, or
one that is replete with nearly insurmountable problems? What we see in the
future is perhaps colored by our own individual inner psychic landscape as
much as our outer circumstances.

“*Tamaso mā jyotir gamaya*”

“Lead me from darkness to light.” (Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad 1.3.28)

Adharma leads us all towards increasing self-centeredness, while Dharma
calls us to fulfill our duties and take greater responsibility for others,
including future generations. Bhagavan Shri Ram’s life is itself a
teaching, a call for us all to uphold Dharma and manifest the courage to
stand against Adharma, even during our darkest hours. May we all find the
courage to stand for Dharma in the years to come, and do what is right,
what is responsible, and make a positive and lasting difference in the
world around us. May that be our Sankalpa, this Deepavali. And in that
Sankalpa, may we find peace and joy. At HUA, this commitment is our mission.

With Warm Regards,

Kalyan Viswanathan,
