There isn't a distinct "Kudali Sringeri Mutt" versus the "Sringeri
Mutt"; rather, the Kudali Sringeri Mutt (or Kudali Maha Samsthanam) is an
ancient, historically significant institution affiliated with the Sringeri
Sharada Peetham, located at the holy confluence of the Tunga and Bhadra
rivers in Kudali, Karnataka. The primary institution is the Sringeri
Sharada Peetham, one of the four major monasteries established by Adi
Shankaracharya, and the Kudali branch is an integral part of its history
and tradition.

The Sringeri Mutt (Sringeri Sharada Peetham):

Founder: Adi Shankaracharya, the philosopher who founded the Advaita
Vedanta system.

Purpose: To protect and propagate Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism) and Advaita
philosophy, as propounded by Adi Shankara.

Significance: Considered the first cardinal monastery (Peetham) established
by Shankara, with branches throughout India and a commitment to Vedic
studies. {History shows that when Harihara Pukka took over where
Vidyaranyar was their chief minister, he took the Mutt as a grant and
placed his uncle (sittappa) as pontiff; and after retirement took over the
mutt) [1300AD to 2025 is 700 year old while Kudali has like other adi
shankara Mutts 2500 year old history; but Later due to absence of pontiff
(as the pontiff who went to Kasi did not return back) Kudali was declared
by Sringeri as its branch which is against the facts}

The Kudali Sringeri Mutt (Kudali Maha Samsthanam):

Location: Situated at the holy confluence of the Tunga and Bhadra rivers in
Kudali, Karnataka, a site referred to as the "Varanasi of the South".

History: An ancient and revered institution, it is a significant site where
many sages have performed tapasyas.

Relationship to Sringeri: It is an established branch and institution that
has maintained its connection to the original Shankara tradition, even
though historical disputes arose over its autonomy and rights with other
institutions like the Tunga Math.

In essence:

The term "Sringeri Mutt" refers to the overarching institution of the
Sringeri Sharada Peetham, while "Kudali Sringeri Mutt" specifically refers
to the historically rich and spiritually significant branch of that same
tradition located in Kudali.

Kudali Sringeri Mahasamsthanam

Continuing the unbroken 2,500-year-old guru parampara, the 71st
peethadhipati, His Holiness Sri Sri Vidyabhinava Vidyaranya Bharati
Mahaswami appointed his successor.

At Kudali, the confluence of Tunga and Bhadra that flows therefrom as the
mighty Tungabhadra, one can amply experience the divine.

Referred to as Varanasi of the South, Kudali is where Jaganmata Sarada
stands, Her divine grace flowing unrestrained, ensuring the upkeep of
dharma among mankind.

When Mandana Misra conceded defeat in a debate with Adi Sankaracharya,
Mandana Misra’s learned wife and judge of the debate, Ubhaya Bharati,
promised to follow Sankara as long as he did not turn to look behind.

At Kudali, when Sankara failed to hear Mata Ubhaya Bharati's anklets, he
turned back and, therefore, she stood there. Knowing her to be an
incarnation of Saraswati, Sankara worshipped her there as Sharadamba.

He sang the Sharada Bhujanga stotram spilling his utmost devotion to Her
where he says –

which alludes to the gracious Sharada in front of who flows Tungabhadra.

Sankara established the Dakshinamnaya Mula Sharada Peetham at this place,
appointing Mandana Misra, who was given the name Sureswaracharya, as the
first Peethadhipati.

This was the first among the four peethams that Sankara established to
protect and propagate the four Vedas.

Kudali Sringeri Dakshinamnaya Moola Sarada Peetham has been propagating
Yajur Veda since then, advocating the principles of Advaita philosophy as
per the smartha tradition.

Continuing the unbroken 2,500-year-old guru parampara, the 71st
peethadhipati, His Holiness Sri Sri Vidyabhinava Vidyaranya Bharati
Mahaswami decided to appoint his successor to take charge of the activities
of the Mahasamstanam.

Accordingly, Paramapujya Abhinava Sankara Bharati Swami, took charge as the
72nd peethadhipati of the Kudali Sringeri Shankaracharya Mahasamstanam
Dakshinamnaya Mula Sri Sharada Peetam on 22 May 2023.

There has been a huge debate and controversy about the date
of Adi Sankaracharya, Date of Gautam Buddha etc.. In case of Adi
Sankaracharya, the date being presently well known is 780 A.D even though
there had been scientific proof to prove his actual birth date to be
around 508 B.C.

Adi Sankara established four mutts in the four corners of India i.e.
Dwarka, Puri, Kudali Sringeri and Badrikashram. Finally he attained siddhi
at Kanchipuram establishing the Kanchi Kamakoti Mutt there. Apart from
these major 5 Sankaracharya mutts, there has been many mutts which
mushroomed few hundred years later for purpose of spreading Advaita like
the Tunga Sringeri, Pushpagiri, Avani mutt, Sivaganga Mutt, Tekke Mutt etc..

The Tunga Sringeri mutt, even though is a branch of the Kudali Sringeri,
coming into existence in the year 1200 A.D became quite ambitious
throughout these years and systematically rewrote their own history and
also distorted Indian history to establish it as the only primary most
Southern Mutt established by Adi Sankara..

To achieve this goal, the Tunga Sringeri Mutt did the following:

1. Established that Adi Sankara was born in 780 A.D as Max Muller had
prepared his own history to degrade Indian History. Lots of historical
evidences were distorted and published..

2. Prepared a list of predecessors totalling 31 sankaracharyas for their
lineage starting with 780 A.D. (They had to provide 800 years to one of
their early acharya to account for their gap even in their chequered
history). Now realising their mistake, they have re-written their own
parampara and accounted the 800 years too..

3. Systematically destroyed the Kudali Sringeri Mutt by plundering their
wealth to such an extent that Kudali Sringeri became mortally frightened of
the Tunga Sringeri. The Tunga Sringeri ensured that one of the early
acharya of the Kudali Sringeri was implicated in some currency note scandal
which later he was proved to be not guilty..

4. Had repeat court cases filed against the Avani Mutt, Sivaganga Mutt,
Kudali Sringeri Mutt, Pushpagiri Mutt and even though they lost many cases
but at times when they had supportive kings/judiciary, they won their lost
cases..

5. The Tunga Sringeri had one more main mutt to fight with which was the
kanchi kamakoti Mutt as their presence in the south of India was a clear
deterrent to the Tunga Sringeri survival.. So they filed many court cases
against the Kanchi Kamakoti mutt which was spread over 250 years and lost
all of them. The number of court cases will be close to about 50 or more
ranging from the right to accept money from the villages to the right to
perform temple kumbhabhishekam..

6. The Tunga Sringeri also ensured destroying many evidences in the form of
manuscripts, books, copper plates etc. which even hinted in the
establishment of the Kanchi Mutt..

We can see from the above that more than the spread of spiritual knowledge,
this mutt had been fighting for so many years to emerge from a branch mutt
of the Kudali-Sringeri to be called the "Tunga Sringeri Mutt" and in this
process destroyed our valuable Indian history

The Kudali Mutt has jurisdiction in the North Western portion of
Mysore and the Southern portion of Maharashtra. Later this had to go to a
Court of Law. Vide the judgement in favour of the Kudali Matha of the
highest court at that time. The acharyas of these two Mathas wear kirita
and karna-patra; and the Sringeri acharya wears the kirita alone. These
honours probably accrued from the connections of these institutions with
the illustrious Vidyaranya the founder of the Vijayanagar empire
(karnataka-simhasana-pratishthapanacharya). The acharyas of the Kamakoti
Pitha, having Indra-sarasvati-patta are accustomed to use all the honours
of the Indrasthana such as ambari, etc.,See Kalyan, Tirthanka, p. 507.
