PERUNAGARBRAHMMAPURISWARAR TEMPLE WITH SANCTUM FOR JESHTA  DEVI - KANCHIPURAM




Introduction

The Perunagar Brahma pureeswarar temple is a centuries oldtemple in the 
Kanchipuram -Vandavashi highway, about 22 KMs from Kanchipuram. Thisis a  large 
Siva temple.  The importance of this temple is for the separatesanctum for 
Jeshta Devi instead of an idol in the prakaram and Daily poojas andworships 
done by devotees .

Significance: One of the ancient and significant temples nearUthiramerur, 
situated on the Vandavasi-Kancheepuram High Road, approximately 22km from 
Kancheepuram.

Puranic Significance

Historical Importance: The temple is over 1000 years old andholds significant 
religious history in Tamil Nadu, especially in the ThondaiMandalam region 
covering Chennai, Cuddalore, and Villupuram.

Epigraphic Notes: The temple has inscriptions, including onewhere Kulothungan I 
lit a lamp and mentions related to Rajaraja II.

Cultural References: The idol of Mother Jeshta Devi belongs to the 
Pallavaperiod. The temple has historical records related to tax collectionfor 
the Vaikasi festival.

Legends: 

The temple is noted for the worship of Lord Brahma, and it isbelieved that 
sages and kings had darshan here on Thai Poosam day. Lord Shivais also 
associated with this temple , and legends speak of Brahma losing one of his 
heads in thissacred place and Lord is named Brahmapureeswarar. 

The legends has that Lord Bramha, Durga, Ganapathi worshippedhere and has a 
sacred Bramha theertham – the temple pond.

History

The temple is above 1000 Years old. The temple wasconstructed by a small 
regional king Villi Thirikaththarayan under Kadava /Pallava King  KoperunSingan 
( 1250 AD), theinscription is not mentioning any year. So it is concluded that 
the temple wasconstructed before 13th Century. 

It is a temple patronized by Chola Kings, Pandyas as well asby the Pallava 
Kings. Here you will find Chola period inscriptions. 

ArchitecturalHighlights:

The temple features a five-tier Rajagopuram with sevenkalasas, and the entrance 
islocated on the south side.

The inner sanctum is surrounded by significant shrinesincluding those for Lord 
Ganesh, Jyeshta Devi, and various other deities.

The divine tree for this temple is the Vanni tree.The Vimana(tower above the 
sanctum) is beautifully adorned and has three kalasas. Thetemple’s sanctum is 
designed in the shape of a gajapristha (elephant back).

The temple is facing east with a 5 tier Rajagopuram on thesouth side. Sri 
Chakkara Vinayagar is immediately after the Rajagopuram. 
Balipedam,Dwajasthambam and Nandhi are in front of the temple on the east side. 
On theLeft of Nandhi Ishta Siddheeswarar Temple and Temple tank. On the right 
is theNavagraha sannadhi. Thereis a 3-tier mini Rajagopuram at the entrance of 
Sanctum Sanctorum.

 To the right is thelarge temple-tank called Brahma Tirtham and next to it is a 
sanctum enshrininga Lingam called Ishta Siddhishwara. A mandapam here has a 
pierced stone window through which one can seethe main east-facing Siva Lingam.

Sanctum

The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum, Antarala,arthamandapam and a muka 
mandapam. Moolavar is on a square avudayar. Sanctum for  Amman is seperate. The 
arthamandapais being supported by 8 pillars. Urchavars and Swamy & Amman jewels 
saferoom are in the arthamandapam. 

On the east side of the arthamandapam wall there is a jollywork. Dwarabalakas, 
a balipedam  andNandhi are before the jolly work. The Sanctum is of 
semicircular shape, up to prastharam. sanctum was built with stone (light  
Green Colour ) and Vimanais of Gajabirushta Vimana, built with brick and mortar.

 In the koshtam, Vinayagar,Dhakshinamurthy, Vishnu, Brahma and Durgai.

In the prakara sannadhi for Sandikeswarar, Naalvar, AshtaNagas (Anandhan,  
Vasuki, Karkodagan,Sarangan, Padman, Maha Padman and Kulikan ), Saptha Mathas. 
Mahaganapthy,Lingothbavar,  and Valli Deivanai withSubramaniyar, Bhairavar and 
Suryan. 

In the 2nd Prakaramsannadhi for Jyeshta Devi ( Thavvai), Durgai Amman ( 16th 
Century ), Somaskandhar ( 11th Century )and Sandikeswarar. In the outer 
prakaram sannadhi for Nandhavanam, Sri  Pattuvathanambigai Amman Temple facing 
southbuilt in Temple like sannadhi. ( In koshtam Brahmi, Kowmari and Durgai ).

Divine Figures:

The inner praharam includes a large Ganesh idol and a shrinefor Mother Jyeshta 
Devi.

Numerous sub deities are represented, including Lord Brahma,Nandideva, Lord 
Muruga, and Lord Vishnu, among others.

Poojas

Regular poojas are done as per Kamika agama, apart from regulars 
poojas,Prathosham, Chitrai Appar Swamy festival, Vaikasi Natarajar 
Abhishekam,Thiruganasambandar Guru Pooja, Vinayagar Chathurthi, Navarathiri, 
Aipasiannabhishekam, Aruthra Dharisanam, Maha shivarathri, 14 Days Bramotsavam 
arecelebrated in a grand manner.  

Festivals

Thai Brahmotsavam (14 days) and Thai Poosam(January-February). The Brahmotsavam 
includes a five-day wedding festival, acar festival on the seventh day, a 
procession of the 63 Nayanmars on the ninthday, and Theerthavari (sacred water 
ritual) on the tenth day.

Masi Magam and MahaShivrathri(February-March) are also celebrated with fervour.

Beliefs

Devotion: People pray to Mother Pattuvadhana Ambikai fortimely marriages and 
child blessings. Regular abhishekam (ritual bathing) isperformed for the 
deities, accompanied by offerings of clothes (vastras).

Jyeshta Devi is worshippedin this Siva temple

Of immense interest and importance is this prakaram is animage of goddess 
Jyeshta Devi, who is worshipped ardently in times bygone to ward off evil. 
Thisdeity, the elder sister of Goddess Lakshmi, arose from Kshirabdi or the 
Oceanof Milk as did Lakshmi. Her image here might perhaps indicate a 
pre-Cholaantiquity for this temple. 

Even today, people come from afar to offer pray toJyeshta Devi in the Perunagar 
temple.

There are 33 inscriptions in Tamil and Grantam are inscribed in this temple. 
The inscriptionsbelongs to Pandyas..KeralaPandyas Kerala Kulasekara Pandyan, 
Maravarman Kulasekaran,Sundarapandiyan-iv, Kadavar King KoperunSingan, Chozha 
King Rajarajan-II,Kulothungan-III, Rajarajan-III, Sambuvarayas.. Vikrama Chozha 
Sambuvarayar, andVijayanagaras, Hariharan-II, Virupakshar, Bhoopathy Rayar, 
Viraprathaba pukkaMaharayar, Krishna Deva Maharayar, Achuthadeva maharayar, 
Sadhasiva maharayar.

As per the inscription this place was called as 
NithavinothaChathurvedhimangalam, Perunagar  andIraivan was called as Perunagar 
Nattu Perunagar Aludayar BiramiswararmudayaNayanar, Bramiswaramudaya Mahadevar 
Perarularar Koyil, The Inscriptions mainlyspeaks about gift made to this temple 
in terms, of money Gold, Land,towards  burning of perpetual lamps,supplying of 
flower, ghee, Oil, Milk to this temple.

Renovation: 

The temple has completed renovation and occupies  a four-acre landscape.
