ॐ अ॒हं रु॒द्रेभि॒र्वसु॑भिश्चराम्य॒हमा᳚दि॒त्यैरु॒त वि॒श्वदे᳚वैः ।

अ॒हं मि॒त्रावरु॑णो॒भा बि॑भर्म्य॒हमि᳚न्द्रा॒ग्नी अ॒हम॒श्विनो॒भा ॥ १॥

oṃ a̱haṃ ru̱drebhi̱rvasu̍bhiścarāmya̱hamā̎di̱tyairu̱ta vi̱śvade̎vaiḥ .

a̱haṃ mi̱trāvaru̍ṇo̱bhā bi̍bharmya̱hami̎ndrā̱gnī a̱hama̱śvino̱bhā .. 1..

I move along with Rudras, the Vasus, the Adityas, also with the
Vishvadevas. I hold both Mitra and Varuna, both Indra and Agni, and both
the Asvin brothers.

 अ॒हं सोम॑माह॒नसं᳚ बिभर्म्य॒हं त्वष्टा᳚रमु॒त पू॒षणं॒ भगम्᳚ ।

अ॒हं द॑धामि॒ द्रवि॑णं ह॒विष्म॑ते सुप्रा॒व्ये॒ ए॒ ३॒॑ यज॑मानाय सुन्व॒ते ॥ २॥

a̱haṃ soma̍māha̱nasa̎ṃ bibharmya̱haṃ tvaṣṭā̎ramu̱ta pū̱ṣaṇa̱ṃ bhagam̎ .

a̱haṃ da̍dhāmi̱ dravi̍ṇaṃ ha̱viṣma̍te suprā̱vye̱ e̱ 3̱̍ yaja̍mānāya
sunva̱te .. 2..

I bear the pressed out Soma, also Tvashtri, Pushan and Bhaga. I grant
wealth to the possessor of oblation, to the mindful institutor of sacrifice
and to the performer of Soma sacrifice.

 अ॒हं राष्ट्री᳚ सं॒गम॑नी॒ वसू᳚नां चिकि॒तुषी᳚ प्रथ॒मा य॒ज्ञिया᳚नाम् ।

तां मा᳚ दे॒वा व्य॑दधुः पुरु॒त्रा भूरि॑स्थात्रां॒ भूर्या᳚ वे॒शयन्᳚तीम् ॥ ३॥

a̱haṃ rāṣṭrī̎ sa̱ṃgama̍nī̱ vasū̎nāṃ ciki̱tuṣī̎ pratha̱mā ya̱jñiyā̎nām .

tāṃ mā̎ de̱vā vya̍dadhuḥ puru̱trā bhūri̍sthātrā̱ṃ bhūryā̎ ve̱śayan̎tīm ..

I am the Queen, the gatherer of vasus (treasures), knower of Brahman, the
first (chief) of the object of yagna (worship). The gods have dispersed me
in many places, having many abodes, causing me to pervade (or overpower)
many.

 मया॒ सोऽअन्न॑मत्ति॒ यो वि॒पश्य॑ति॒ यः प्राणि॑ति॒ य ईं᳚ श‍ृ॒णोत्यु॒क्तम् ।

अ॒म॒न्तवो॒मान्त उप॑क्षियन्ति श्रु॒धिश्रु॑त श्रद्धि॒वं ते᳚ वदामि ॥ ४॥

mayā̱ so’anna̍matti̱ yo vi̱paśya̍ti̱ yaḥ prāṇi̍ti̱ ya ī̎ṃ śṛ̱ṇotyu̱ktam .

a̱ma̱ntavo̱mānta upa̍kṣiyanti śru̱dhiśru̍ta śraddhi̱vaṃ te̎ vadāmi .. 4..

He who eats food, he who sees, who breathes, who hears the spoken word does
so through me alone. Even the non-perceivers of you dwell near me. Hear me!
he who is capable of hearing me! I speak to you the credible.

 अ॒हमे॒व स्व॒यमि॒दं व॑दामि॒ जुष्टं᳚ दे॒वेभि॑रु॒त मानु॑षेभिः ।

यं का॒मये॒ तं त॑मु॒ग्रं कृ॑णोमि॒ तं ब्र॒ह्माणं॒ तमृषिं॒ तं सु॑मे॒धाम् ॥ ५॥

a̱hame̱va sva̱yami̱daṃ va̍dāmi̱ juṣṭa̎ṃ de̱vebhi̍ru̱ta mānu̍ṣebhiḥ .

yaṃ kā̱maye̱ taṃ ta̍mu̱graṃ kṛ̍ṇomi̱ taṃ bra̱hmāṇa̱ṃ tamṛṣi̱ṃ taṃ
su̍me̱dhām .. 5..

I speak this myself, which is liked by both gods and men alike, whomever I
wish, I make him powerful, well versed in knowledge, a sage and a wise one.

 अ॒हं रु॒द्राय॒ धनु॒रात॑नोमि ब्रह्म॒द्विषे॒ शर॑वे॒हन्त॒ वा उ॑ ।

अ॒हं जना᳚य स॒मदं᳚ कृणोम्य॒हं द्यावा᳚पृथि॒वी आवि॑वेश ॥ ६॥

a̱haṃ ru̱drāya̱ dhanu̱rāta̍nomi brahma̱dviṣe̱ śara̍ve̱hanta̱ vā u̍ .

a̱haṃ janā̎ya sa̱mada̎ṃ kṛṇomya̱haṃ dyāvā̎pṛthi̱vī āvi̍veśa .. 6..

The bow I stretch for the arrow for Rudra is for the purpose of killing the
hater of Brahman. I do battle for people. I have pervaded heaven and earth.

 अ॒हं सु॑वे पि॒तर॑मस्य मू॒र्धन् मम॒ योनि॑र॒प्स्व (अ॒) १॒॑न्तः स॑मु॒द्रे ।

ततो॒ विति॑ष्ठे॒ भुव॒नानु॒ विश्वो॒ तामूं द्यां व॒र्ष्मणोप॑स्पृशामि ॥ ७॥

a̱haṃ su̍ve pi̱tara̍masya mū̱rdhan mama̱ yoni̍ra̱psva (a̱) 1̱̍ntaḥ
sa̍mu̱dre .

tato̱ viti̍ṣṭhe̱ bhuva̱nānu̱ viśvo̱ tāmūṃ dyāṃ va̱rṣmaṇopa̍spṛśāmi .. 7..

I generate the father on the summit of this (sky). My source is in the
waters, in the inner ocean. Thence, I spread among all living creatures,
alongside the all-pervading, and with the vertex I touch that sky.

 अ॒हमे॒व वात॑ऽइव॒ प्रवा᳚म्या॒रभ॑माणा॒ भुव॑नानि॒ विश्वा᳚ ।

प॒रो दि॒वा प॒रए॒ना पृ॑थि॒व्यै ताव॑ती महि॒ना सम्ब॑भूव ॥ ८॥

ॐ शान्तिः॒ शान्तिः॒ शान्तिः॑ ॥

a̱hame̱va vāta̎iva̱ pravā̎myā̱rabha̍māṇā̱ bhuva̍nāni̱ viśvā̎ .

pa̱ro di̱vā pa̱rae̱nā pṛ̍thi̱vyai tāva̍tī mahi̱nā samba̍bhūva .. 8..

oṃ śānti̱ḥ śānti̱ḥ śānti̍ḥ ..

I only breathe forth, like the wind, while holding together all living
creatures. So great (vast) I have become possessing greatness that I am
beyond heaven and this earth.

Durga Description

Devi Suktam or the Vaak Sutam (Vak suktam) occurs in the 10th mandala of
Rig Veda Samhita as suktam number 125. The seer of the mantra is vak, the
daughter of rishi ambharnaa, resulting in the complete name vagambharni.
The devata is also vagambharni, meaning that the seer completely identifies
with the seen in this suktam. Various interpretations of the vak suktam
have been given in the literature partly due to the fact that the verbs or
nouns present could have multiple meanings.

Saraswati Suktam - Hymn to a Divine River in the Rig Veda

In the Rig Veda, the term Saraswati refers to a river and/or a river
goddess. There are three exclusive hymns to Saraswathi in the Rig Veda –
one is the 61st hymn (suktam) in the sixth mandala/chapter (RV 6.61), and
the other two are the 95th and 96th hymns in the seventh mandala (RV 7.95 &
7.96). The first of these is the longest, with 14 verses (mantras or riks),
and is explained later below. Incidentally, the word Saraswati itself
appears over 70 times in the Rig Veda in numerous hymns.

The term Saraswati came to be used to mean Vak (speech) or to imply
knowledge or learning much later, beginning with the Yajurveda and
Atharvaveda. However, this Saraswati Suktam (RV 6.61), which is actually
addressed to a river, is often chanted, along with other verses/shlokas, as
a prayer to Saraswati, the goddess of learning.

A question arises as to which is the river that is being referred to as
Saraswati in the Rig Veda. There are many divergent views. One view is that
it is an imaginary or mythical river. But given the extent of details that
are given, it is most likely to be a terrestrial river than a celestial
one. There are strong arguments that the river Saraswati so often mentioned
in the Rig Veda, was a major river that flowed through modern Haryana,
Rajasthan and Gujarat and joined the sea. A dry river bed can be discerned
even to this day, and there is also archaeological evidence of many
settlements along this route. The river is said to have dried up nearly
4000 years ago due to tectonic changes. There are also arguments that
Saraswati refers to river Helmand or Arghandab in Afghanistan, or to some
other river in Iran.

English transliteration, translation and brief explanatory notes for the
hymn (RV 6.61) are given below. The hymn is associated with rishi (sage)
Bharadwaja, who incidentally was the preceptor of king Divodasa referred to
in this hymn. The hymn is dedicated to devi (goddess) Saraswati and the
mantras are in three different chandas (poetical meters) – gayatri, jagati
and thrishtup. The first seven mantras are addressed to a goddess who
destroys enemies and bestows well-being. It is from the eighth mantra that
it becomes clearly evident that the goddess being addressed is indeed a
river.

1 iyam adadaad rabhasam rnachyutham divodaasam vadhryashvaaya daashushe

yaa shashvanthamaachakhaadaavasam panim thaa the daathraani thavishaa
sarasvathi

She gave to Vadhryashva, the worshipper, the impulsive, debt removing
Divodasa (as a son). She who destroyed the rude miser (pani) in giving
oblations, O Saraswati, such are your powerful bestowals.

Saraswati gave Divodasa in gift to Vadhryashva, as a son. Divodasa (“the
servant of heaven”), a king, was helped by Indra against his enemies. Pani
may also refer to a tribe/people, whom Divodasa defeated in battle.

2  iyam shushmebhirbisakhaa ivaarujath saanu giriinaam thavishebhiruurmibhih

paaraavathaghniimavase suvrkthibhih sarasvathiimaa vivaasema dhiithibhih

She, like the one who digs up lotus stalks, breaks the summits of the hills
with roaring waters and strong waves. We invoke Saraswati, the slayer of
paaraavathas, seeking protection, with hymns of praise and with devoted
prayer.

Paaraavathas are explained as a non-Aryan or antagonistic tribe living
along the river Saraswathi. Paravathas could also mean strangers/distant
people.

3 sarasvathi devanido ni barhaya prajaam vishvasya brsayasya maayinah

utha kshithibhyo avaniiravindo vishamebhyo asravo vaajiniivathi

O Saraswati, you who are rich in wealth/food, you who provides (riverine)
land to men, and takes them away from difficulties, destroy the offspring
of the god hater, the universal deceptor Brsaya.

Brsaya is another name for Tvashtr, the father of Vritra, an enemy of Indra.

4 pra no devii sarasvathii vaajebhirvaajiniivathii, dhiinaamavithryavathu

Goddess Saraswati, who is rich in wealth with food, protector of devotees,
may she protect us well.

5 yasthvaa devi sarasvathyupabruuthe dhane hithe, indram na vrthrathuurye

O goddess Saraswati, whosoever invokes you gains wealth, like Indra in his
victory against Vrthra/enemy.

6 thvam devi sarasvathyavaa vaajeshu vaajini, radaa puusheva nah sanim

You goddess Saraswati, who is abundant in food, protect us; bestow on us
gifts like (the god) puushan.

Puushan = god of nourishment

7 utha syaa nah sarasvathii ghoraa hiranyavarthanih, vrthraghnii vashti
sushtuthim

May the fierce Saraswati, the slayer of enemies, who traverses a golden
path, grant us prosperity,

8  yasyaa anantho ahruthasthveshashcharishnurarn- avah, amashcharathi
roruvath

whose limitless, unrestrained, forceful meandering wave moves quickly with
a loud roar.

9  saa no vishvaa athi dvishah svasr-ranyaa rthaavarii, athannaheva suuryah

She who follows a regular routine along with her other sisters, leads us
beyond all our adversaries, like the passing on of the sun.

Seven sisters of river Saraswati: One of the interpretations is - river
Sindhu and its five tributaries (Vitasta, Ashikni, Parushni, Vipasha and
Shutudri) and Drshadvathi, which is a tributary of Saraswati.

10  utha nah priyaa priyaasu sapthasvasaa sujushtaa, sarasvathii sthomyaa
bhuuth

She who is our dearest among the dear ones, who has seven sisters, is
verily propitiated. May Saraswati be praised.

May be interpreted to mean that she is the dearest or the most loved one
among the rivers.

11 aapaprushii paarthhivaanyuru rajo anthariksham, sarasvathii nidaspaathu

May Saraswati, who showers water to the expansive earth and the sky beyond,
protect us from criticizers.

12 thrishadhasthaa sapthadhaathuh pancha jaathaa vardhayanthii |
vaaje-vaaje havyaa bhuuth

She who has a triple seat/three-fold source, comprises seven elements, who
increases the prosperity of the five tribes, may she be invoked in every
endeavour/battle.

Three-fold source may be referring to three rivulets which join to form the
river. Saptha dhatus are the seven metallic elements – gold, silver,
copper, lead, tin, iron and bell metal. The “five tribes” are referred to
several times in the Rig Veda, but are not clearly identified. One view is
that the five tribes/peoples referred to are – Anu, Druhyu, Turvasha,
Srnjaya and Krivi.

13 pra yaa mahimnaa mahinaasu chekithe dyumnebhiranyaa apasaamapasthamaa

rathha iva brhathii vibhvane krthopasthuthyaa chikithushaa sarasvathii

She who is distinguished by greatness among the great (rivers), who is
unique among the glorious, best among the running waters, who is made in
great expanse like a chariot, (this) Saraswati is praised by the worshipers.

14 sarasvathyabhi no neshi vasyo maapa sphariih payasaa maa na aa dhak

jushasva nah sakhyaa veshyaa cha maa thvath kshethraanyaranaani ganma

O Saraswati! Lead us towards prosperity. Do not constrain us. Do not make
us short of water. Be pleased by our friendship and subordination. Let us
not go from your area to other lands.

One of the chants that is prevalent during Navaratris is the Tantroktam
Devi Suktam – the Slokas from 9 through 82, in the 5th Chapter of Durga
Saptashati, which is a part of Devi Mahatmyam. More popular are the 21
verses (6 to 26) that begins with “ya devi sarva bhuteshu‘. Tantroktam Devi
Suktam is a part of Markandeya Purana.
