The Shangumugam Devi Temple is located, near the ShangumughamBeach and the domestic airport in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The Devi Temple is dedicated to the goddess Durga, whoembodies the feminine divine power and is worshiped for her strength,protection, and benevolence. Devotees worship Goddess Durga here, seeking herblessings for protection, strength, and prosperity. She is considered as thesister of God Anantha Padmanabha swamy in Trivandrum. The temple is one among the 108 Durga temple installed bysage Parasurama. A few years ago thetemple has been renovated and now the temple and surroundings appear verybeautiful, neat and tidy. Aeons ago, theGoddess did penance at a holy place with sand hills surrounded by the sea onthe four sides, on the southwestern side of this land. Shukracharya and his wife Urjaswathi who were ardent devotees of the Goddess alsosat in penance facing the Goddess. Even after many years, the Goddess did notopen her eyes or bless the Acharya and his wife. Shukracharya became angry atthis and blew the conch to wake the Goddess from her meditation. When theGoddess opened her eyes, she saw Shukracharya standing there with the conch inhand. Hence this place came to be known as Shangumugham. Etymology The name Shankumugham likely derives from the Malayalam words"shankhu", meaning conch shell, and "mugam" meaning face ormouth, referring to the shape of the beach or the waves resembling a conchshell. The beach also holds significant religious importance as thetraditional bathing spot for the idol of the city's presiding deity, SriAnanthapadmanabhan, during the annual Arattu festival, a tradition deeplyconnected to the area. There is another legend abut Etymology of Sangumugam. Once sage Sukrawas conducting a yaga with his wife Urjaswathi in this location for pleasingDurga. Durga did not appear even at the completion of yaga for years.Sukracharya took the conch and blew loud and then Devi appeared to him, firstseeing the conch and then the face of Sukaracharya. Hence the name Sangumugam. History It is believed that the temple belonged to Kuvakkarapotti whowas part of the Ettara Yogam in Travancore kingdom. Now the temple is underTravancore Devaswam board. Architecture The traditional Kerala temple architecture, complete withintricate carvings and serene surroundings, makes it a compelling sight forboth devotees and visitors. This auspicious occasioncoincides with the Bharani Nakshatra in the Meenam month, adding to its significance.Devotees participate in various rituals and offerings, including thetraditional Pongalaceremony, invoking the blessings of the goddess and seeking her divine graceand protection. Pournami Pooja-At the Shangumugam Devi Temple inVallakkadavu, Thiruvananthapuram, special Pournami poojas are conducted,dedicated to honouring the full moon.
