Legend

The beautiful Jagadamba is consecrated here. Aeons ago, theGoddess did penance
at a holy place with sand hills surrounded by the sea onthe four sides, on the
southwestern side of this land.

Shukracharya and his wife Urjaswathi  who were ardent devotees of the Goddess
alsosat in penance facing the Goddess. Even after many years, the Goddess did
notopen her eyes or bless the Acharya and his wife. Shukracharya became angry
atthis and blew the conch to wake the Goddess from her meditation. When
theGoddess opened her eyes, she saw Shukracharya standing there with the conch
inhand. Hence this place came to be known as Shangumugham.

Etymology

The name Shankumugham likely derives from the Malayalam words"shankhu", meaning
conch shell, and "mugam" meaning face ormouth, referring to the shape of the
beach or the waves resembling a conchshell.

The beach also holds significant religious importance as thetraditional bathing
spot for the idol of the city's presiding deity, SriAnanthapadmanabhan, during
the annual Arattu festival, a tradition deeplyconnected to the area.

There is another legend  abut Etymology of Sangumugam. Once sage Sukrawas
conducting a yaga with his wife Urjaswathi in this location for pleasingDurga.
Durga did not appear even at the completion of yaga for years.Sukracharya took
the conch and blew loud and then Devi appeared to him, firstseeing the conch
and then the face of Sukaracharya. Hence the name Sangumugam.
