Introduction

Thrivikramangalam Mahavishnu Temple(Vamanamoorthy) is one ofthe oldest temples
in Kerala. Thetemple is located 5 km east of Thiruvananthapuram Central on
thepoojappura road , on the banks of the scenic Karamana River. The temple
isabout 50 feet from the shore of the calmly flowing Karamana River. The base
ofthe temple is about 5 feet thick and the front is made of latex.

History

The Thrivikramangalam Mahavishnu Temple, also known as theThrivikramangalam
Temple, is a historic Hindu temple situated at Thamalam onthe bank of the river
Karamana. The temple can be dated to the 11th-12thcentury CE.

Architecture

The Sreekovil is three-storeyed and the roof is covered withtiles. Above the
granite Adhishtana there is a rare variety of outstandingstructures made of a
rare variety of laterite blocks.

The panels depicting the dancing figures and the Dwarapalakafigures are also
noteworthy. The Dwarapalakas standing on the coils of snakes carved in granite
arelocated on either side of the main entrance. Dwarapalakas arecomparatively
tall and their one leg is resting on the hood of the serpent.

There are three stone relief panels on the backside,  the central rectangular
one flanked by twotriangular pieces carved on vyali panel moulded in the form
of an arch.  The central compartment contains threefigurines of a dancing woman
and two mothers with their kids on both sides ofthe dancing woman. The other
two panels depict two types of dance poses alongwith the accompanying artists
keeping rhythm and time with percussioninstruments like Maram and Thappu.

One of the dancing figures illustrates the posture ArdhaMadali as described in
the Natya Shastra of Sage Bharata.  The graceful twist of the danseuse's body
hasbeen portrayed with exquisite workmanship. The seductive smile and
coquettishcharm of the danseuse as well as the appreciate fervour on the face
of thepercussionists reveal the wonderful aesthetic detail and artistic sense
withwhich the graceful lithic translation has been made.

There were murals on the lime plastered lower walls of theSreekovil which are
almost been damaged.
