Palakkad district, Kerala, dedicated to the goddess MangottuBhagavathi, a form 
of Goddess Parvathy. The temple is known for its strictrituals and the Friday 
procession where the deity, on an elephant,circumambulates the inner sanctum.

Introduction

The Mangottu Bhagavathi Temple is a prominent Hindu templelocated in Athipotta, 
Palakkad district, Kerala, dedicated to the goddessMangottu Bhagavathi, a form 
of Goddess Parvathy. The temple is known for itsstrict rituals and the Friday 
procession where the deity, on an elephant,circumambulates the inner sanctum. 
Mangottukavu and Mangottu Bhagavathi referto the same temple and deity. 
Mangottukavu is the name of the temple, whileMangottu Bhagavathi is the name of 
the goddess (a form of Parvati) enshrinedwithin it. The temple is located in 
Athipotta, Palakkad district, Kerala. Thistemple is visited by many devotees 
far and wide.

Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays are considered special days tovisit the temple. 
The temple is a public religious institution coming under theMalabar Devaswom 
Board. The day-to-day administration is carried out by anExecutive Officer 
appointed by the Devaswom Board. The Hereditary trusteeshipbelongs to Poomully 
Mana.

Mangottu Bhagavathi, isconsidered the younger sister of Parakkattu Bhagwathi 
who has a temple inKavasseri nearby.

Legend

According to the legend, once there lived a weaver named KalambathUnni 
Mannadiar  who was a great devoteeof the Goddess. He wove clothes and sold them 
in places where festivals wereheld. During one such festival occasion, 
mannadiar  was so enchanted by the appearance of the Devithere that he 
mentallyrequested her to come along with him. At that time, the wind removed 
the clothes of the idol ofthe Goddess which was being taken out in procession 
and mannadiar immediatelythrew the cloth that he had brought to sell on to the 
goddess. Thiscloth fell on the Goddess and got attached there. Mannadiar  
returned to his village next day and he wascarrying an Umbrella. After some 
time he felt tired and he kept the Umbrella onfloor and slept nearby. When he 
woke up, he was not able to remove the umbrellafrom the ground. An astrologer 
was summoned who told Mannadiar  that the Goddess has occupied the Umbrella 
andshe wants to live in this place. Then the astrologer threw the stick in 
hishand and told that a temple should be built where it falls. This place is 
thepresent Athipotta.

Architecture

The temple is built in Kerala style of architecture. There isa separate shrine 
for Lord Ganesha inside the temple and there is a temple for MolokanChathan, a 
spirit on the Northern Side, outside the Temple compound.  The temple has a 
Kalyana Mandapam (MarriageHall). The templeboasts traditional Kerala 
architecture with a captivating facade and ornatelycarved structures.

Deities

Apart from the powerful Bhagavathy, Ganapathy has a shrine inthe South-West 
corner called Kanni Moola. The goddess in this temple is supposed to be in her 
veryfierce form. 

Sub deities

Mookken Chathen is situated on the Northern side of thetemple, who is guarding 
theGoddess. Special Poojas are conducted in his shrine also. As knownas the 
Watch Lord of Bhagavathy, is consecrated on the Northern Side, outside 
theTemple compound.  SpecialPoojas are  done in the Sannidhi.  These poojas are 
not done as per the TantricRituals; These are doneunder "Koulachara".  Poojas 
aredone by the Hereditary Family.

Nalambalam

Blowing of the Conch - 4:30 AM

Sreekovil opens at 5:00 AM

Nirmalyam up to 5:30 AM

Ganapathy Homam - 5:30 AM

Usha Pooja - 7:30 AM

Ucha Pooja at 11:30 AM (on Tuesdays, Fridays & Sundays)and 9:30 AM on all other 
days.

Temple closes at 12:00 PM on (Tuesdays, Fridays & Sundays)and 11:00 AM on all 
other days.

Temple opens at 5:00 PM inthe evening

Deeparadhana at 6:30 PM

Athazhapooja at 7:30 PM

Shrine closes at 8:00 PM

Special Rituals

During Navarathri days, a special Pooja,  Navarathri Vilakku is done at the 
temple. Thetemple gets crowded on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays. 

Offerings :

While specific pooja rituals might be best explained by atemple priest, 
devotees typically offer prayers, flowers, and coconuts to theGoddess. 
Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays are considered particularly auspiciousfor 
darshan and pooja. Ganapathyhomam, Saraswatham, Bhagya sooktham,Kumkumarchana, 
Lalitha Ashtothram, Thechi Raktha Pushpanjali, Niramala,Chuttuvilakku are a few 
more offerings .

Festivals

1. Vela:The main festival in the temple isVela Celebrated in the month of April 
(Medam month in Malayalam Calendar year).This Festival is conducted by the 
people nearby Known as Desam.  This event is of large-scale participation 
ofDevotees.

2.Utsavam :This is a 10day long Tantric Ritualperformed in the temple for the 
enrichment of divinity of the deity .

This will be performed under the auspice of the Temple TantriBhramashree 
Andaladi Manakkal Sankaran Namboodirippad. The Utsavam is conductedDuring the 
Malayalam month of Edavam ( May-15 to June 15) every year. 

During Utsavam, on thestar of Chithira in the month of Edavam, Chandattam is 
performed. On the 9th day, the deity will betaken out in procession to Gayathri 
River Banks for Aarattu. Bhagavathy willhave Aarattu in the Kadvu (River ) and 
the deeparadhana will be performed thereitself. Then Bhagavathy will be taken 
back in procession having decoratedelephants, Panchavadhyam and with large 
number of Devotees, who would take bathin the river during the course of 
Aarattu and Deeparadhana.

3. Laksharchana : 

This is also a Tantric Ritual.  This is conducted during the month of Kanni 
(September-October) every year.  Vedicscholars will recite Mantras all along 
the day, and the Kalasams will be pouredover the Main Deity every day.  This 
7-dayRitual also attracts many devotees.

During Navarathridays, a special Pooja,  Navarathri Vilakku is done atthe 
temple.

Vishukkani, Illam Nira, Nira Puthari  etc. are also celebrated in the temple

The Temple has a limited lodging facility with 6 Roomsavailable for daily rent. 
Temple also has a Kalyana Mandapam.
