PATEESWARARTEMPLE , PERUR, COIMBATORE. TAMIL NADU-COMPILED.
Deear friends, Today my posting is about the Perur Pateeswarar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva located in western part of Coimbatore in the state ofTamil Nadu. The temple was built by Karikala Chola in 6th century CE. The temple is located on the bankof the Noyyal Riverand has been patronized by poets like Arunagirinathar and Kachiappa Munivar.Patteeswarar (Shiva) is the presiding deity of this temple together with hisconsort Pachainayaki (Parvati). The main deity is a Swayambu Lingam. There is another Patteswara temple at Thanjavur in Tamilnadu, perhaps more famous than the one in Coimbatore. I will be writing about it later, if not our member MrRajaram, post about it on reading this posting. Hope a divine reading. Gopalakrishnan 15-5-2025 Legend This Temple purana in Sanskrit is known by the name Adhi mahathmayam. This purana is written by Thiruvada Thurai adhinam Kachiyapa Munivar in thename of Perur Puranam. So people excavated the particular place and took selfexistence (Swayambu Moorthi Patteeswarar). Even now we can visualise of foot mot fit of calf andhorn of the cow on the forehead of Linga idol. So this temple is known by the name Patteswar. History The temple was built by the Chola emperor Karikala in the 6th century CE.
