“O Alathiyoor Hanuman, do not have nightmares. If you do, wake me up with
your tail.”

A stone floor is located near the temple to commemorate Hanuman's crossing
of the ocean. The long black stone at the end of the floor is thought to be
the ocean. Devotees run and jump without touching this black stone (ocean).
This jump is a symbol of Hanuman Swami crossing the ocean. It is believed
that children, especially, will have long and healthy lives due to the gaze
of Hanuman. Several reconstruction works have already been carried out in
this temple, and many more reconstruction works are yet to be carried out.

Meaning: – He who is faster than the speed of mind. Who is more potent than
Vayu, who has won a complete victory over all the senses, who is at the
forefront of the intellect, the son of Vayu.

The most interesting fact of the temple is it is a Rama temple where
Hanuman is only an Upa devatha. Rama is without Sita and Hanuman
appears to be taking orders from Rama. Devotees believe that Lord Rama
is sending Hanuman to search for Sita and is telling him the “Abijnana
Vakyam( words for identification) that would help him to identify
himself to Sita when he locates her. So the face of Hanuman shows
concentration and attention. It is interesting to see that Lord Lakshmana
also is not with him because Lord Rama wants the secret words not to be
heard by any one except his emissary. Possibly this is the story of
Indra’s son attacking Sita as a crow. Sri. Lakshamana is separately
positioned to the west within the temple complex a but a few meters away
from Sri Rama, Outside the periphery of Naalambalam. It is believed that
Sri Lakshmana was keeping himself at a small distance away deliberately.

KR It is bhakti to say temple is 3000 years old and Vasishtha
established it. In 1000 BCE there was only Kerala tribal. The first known
mention of Kerala occurs on one of the rock inscriptions left by Asoka, the
Mauryan emperor during the third century B.C. It was then an independent
kingdom known as Kerala putra, which was ruled by the powerful Chera
dynasty until the fifth century A.D. The history of Kerala from the Sixth
to Eighth centuries A.D. is obscure. From 825 AD - the year in which the
"Kolla" era began - Kerala rose to prominence under the Kulasekhara
dynasty. The Ninth and Tenth Centuries formed a golden age marked by a
remarkable development in philosophy, literature, education and the fine
arts. This period marks the origin of Malayalam as a separate language.
During the Eleventh century, a hundred years' war with the Cholas led to
the disintegration of the Chera kingdom into innumerable principalities. By
the beginning of the 14th century, however, the ruler Ravi Varma
Kulasekhara established a short-lived supremacy over the whole of Southern
India. Soon after his death in 1314 Kerala became a conglomeration of
warring chieftaincies among which the most important were Calicut in the
North and Travancore in the South. The year 1498 - when Vasco de Gama
landed at Calicut - marked the beginning of the era of foreign intervention
and occupation. In the 16th century the Portuguese superseded the Arab
traders and dominated the commerce of Malabar. The Dutch ousted the
Portuguese in the 17th century but met with a crushing defeat at the hands
of King Marthanda Varma of Travancore in 1741. The destructive invasions of
Kerala between 1766 and 1790 by Hyder Ali and Tippu Sultan, of Mysore,
paved the way for the establishment of British Power. Both Cochin and
Travancore were obliged to accept British suzerainty in 1791 and 1795
respectively. The Zamorins' territories in the north were annexed by the
British and constituted into the Malabar district of the Madras presidency
under their direct rule. Unsuccessful revolts against British rule were led
by Pazhassi Raja of Malabar from 1800 to 1805 and by Velu Thampi of
Travancore in 1809, both of whom were martyred as a result. Kerala is
mentioned without any names in the epics. Puranas and Theertham varis
describe about Kerala. Thus, Aalathiyur temple as such as labelled by many
sources, as on and from 1000 AD may be right. Then Ay kingdom was there;
chozha dynasty were there; and in 1200AD Kulasekhara Varman came in.
Kerala History, is limited as described by the Kerala Govt itself.
