The second line—Tomaso ma jyotirgamaya—means “Lead me from darkness to
light.” When the Vedas refer to darkness and light, they mean ignorance and
knowledge, respectfully. This is so because ignorance, like darkness,
obscures true understanding. [BRAHADARANYAKA UPANISHAD].
ॐ असतो मा सद्गमय । तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय ।
मृत्योर्मा अमृतं गमय । ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः ॥
Om Asato Maa Sad-Gamaya | Tamaso Maa Jyotir-Gamaya |
Mrtyor-Maa Amrtam Gamaya | Om Shaantih Shaantih Shaantih ||
1: Om, (O Lord) From (the Phenomenal World of) Unreality, make me go (i.e.
Lead me) towards the Reality (of Eternal Self),
2: From the Darkness (of Ignorance), make me go (i.e. Lead me) towards the
Light (of Spiritual Knowledge),
3: From (the World of) Mortality (of Material Attachment), make me go (i.e.
Lead me) towards the World of Immortality (of Self-Realization),
4: Om, Peace, Peace, Peace.
SB 2.5.25: The sound representation of the Lord is nondifferent
from the Lord Himself because the Lord and His representation in sound are
absolute knowledge One who is thus able to associate with the Lord is sure
to be delivered from the darkness of the created world, which is a product
of false ego (tamaso mā jyotir gama).
SB 2.5.30: The Vedas instruct us to get out of the existence of darkness
and go forward on the path of light (tamaso mā jyotir gama). The path of
light is therefore to satisfy the senses of the Lord. Misguided men, or
less intelligent men, follow the path of self-realization without any
attempt to satisfy the transcendental senses of the path shown by other
devotees of the Lord. The devotees, however, are above the yogīs and the
jñānīs because pure devotees do not deny the senses of the Lord.
Bhagavad-gita
Lecture on BG 2.16 --: So if you want to stop the danger of death, then you
have to understand what is that Absolute Truth. Just like I have given
already the example of sunshine. If you come to the sunshine, there is no
darkness. But if you keep yourself within closed door, do not like to see
the sunshine, that is your own choice. So everyone should try to come to
the light. That is Vedic injunction, tamaso mā jyotir gamaya, means "Do not
remain in darkness, come to the light." Light means knowledge, and darkness
means ignorance. So every one of us now in the ignorance that we do not
know "What I am." Everyone is in darkness in the concept of body. Listen to
the photons of the neutrons. Lecture on BG 2.18 Yasya prabhā prabhavato
jagad-aṇḍa-koṭi-kotiṣv aśeṣa-vasudhādi-vibhūti-bhinnam, tad brahma niṣkalam
anantam aśeṣa-bhūtam (Bs. 5.40). So come to the Brahman platform,
brahmajyoti. Don't remain within this darkness.
Therefore, here we require the sun and the moon and the electric light.
Otherwise, it is dark. As soon as the electricity will fail, then whole
city will be in darkness. So the nature of this... And the Vedic mantra
also says that "Don't remain in this darkness." Tamaso mā jyotir gamaya:
"Just try to transfer yourself in that illuminated world." Jyotir gamaya.
Jyoti means illumination. So this world, this material world, is full of
darkness. Darkness, one meaning of darkness is ignorance. And another
darkness, you know, without, absence of light. So this nature of this
material world is darkness. The darkness is bodily concept of life.
(SB 10.84.13) The.... So long you are in the bodily concept of life, "I am
this body," "I am Indian," "I am American," "I am brāhmaṇa." "I am
kṣatriya," "I am black," "I am white," "I am fatty." "I am thin..." These
are all bodily concept of life, abhijñeṣu sa eva go-kharaḥ
(Go=cow;khara=ass)
Yac cakṣur eṣa savitā sakala-grahāṇām. Every planetary system there are
many millions and trillions of living entities. They can see only when
there is sunrise. Therefore, everything here is temporary, anitya. Anitya.
Anitya means they are not permanent. But here it is said, śreya uttamam.
Uttamam means udgata tamaṁ yasmād. This material world is called tamaḥ.
Therefore Vedic advice is tamasi mā jyotir gama: "Don't remain in this
darkness. Try to go to the light." Jyotir gama.
Lead kindly light, lead me on
Through the dark night, to a bright dawn
Lead kindly light, lead me on
Lead me from unreal into the real
Lead me from darkness to divine light
Lead me from death to life eternal (2)
Lead me, guide me, Oh love divine
Asathoma Sadgamaya
Tamaso Maa Jyotir Gamaya
The second line—tamaso ma jyotirgamaya—means “Lead me from
darkness to light.” When the Vedas refer to darkness and light, they mean
ignorance and knowledge, respectfully. This is so because ignorance, like
darkness, obscures true understanding. And in the same way that the only
remedy for darkness is light, the only remedy for ignorance is knowledge.
The knowledge spoken of here is again the knowledge of one’s true nature.
Currently, in the darkness of our ignorance, we believe ourselves to be
bound and limited (otherwise we would not be reciting these mantras in the
first place). But the Guru and the scriptures are telling us that, in
truth, we are not, never will be and never have been bound. Eternally we
sat-cit-ananda. The only thing that can remove our ignorance regarding our
true nature is a spiritual education at the hands of a True Master like
Amma. At the culmination of such an education, light floods the room, as it
were; darkness vanishes.
The photon was originally called a “light quantum” (das Lichtquant)
by Albert Einstein. The modern name “photon” derives from the Greek word
for light, φῶς, (transliterated phôs), and was coined in 1926 by the
physical chemist Gilbert N. The photon theory of light was first introduced
by Albert Einstein in 1905, though he did not use the term photon. In this
theory, light is made of discrete bundles of electromagnetic energy emitted
by an excited atom. Abstract. The human body literally glimmers. The
intensity of the light emitted by the body is 1000 times lower than the
sensitivity of our naked eyes. Ultraweak photon emission is known as the
energy released as light through the changes in energy metabolism. That is
the question asked by a physicist in Germany, who has calculated the lower
limit for the lifetime of the photon to be three years in the photon's
frame of reference. This translates to about one billion billion (1018)
years in our frame of reference. DNA has been found to emit light under
specific conditions and at physiological temperatures. This discovery
suggests DNA is a significant source of ultraweak photon emission in
biological systems. This is because light travels at a constant speed of
299,792,458 meters per second (or about 186,282 miles per second). So
while *photons
do not experience time*, the time it takes for light to travel from one
location to another is still affected by the distance between those
locations. Light just keeps going and going until it bumps into something. Then
it can either be reflected or absorbed. Astronomers have detected some
light that has been traveling for more that 12 billion years.
CONCLUSION: Understanding photon energy is a fundamental
scientific issue for obtaining clean and sustainable energy. The
understanding of the properties of light and photon energy is an important
issue in physics/natural philosophy, and it is also a problem of pursuing
cognitive certainty of nature. Comparing the deterministic differences
between consciousness and experience, summarizing and analysing the three
causes of thinking, constructing the logical relationship between natural
philosophy, philosophical epistemology, and certainty, a four-element
cognitive model of natural philosophy was established. The model answers
the source of certainty of axiomatic knowledge, deepens the understanding
of Newton's natural philosophy method of "induction", and also answers the
validity of physics and mathematics, as well as their roles and functions
in understanding nature. The model clearly reveals the logical relationship
between time and space. Based on Newton's methodology of natural
philosophy, the logical connection between natural laws and causal thinking
and the limitations of falsifications are expounded, and the traceability
of theory (axiom) and three traceability conditions are proposed. A new
inductive cognition of "photons as electric magnetic particles" was
proposed, and the micro effects and influences of photon kinetic energy are
discussed by inductive method. The approach to obtaining infinite clean
energy (photon kinetic energy) has been theoretically elaborated. Why does
light have such a deep relevance? Only when it is absent and darkness fills
its place does man acknowledge its importance and its magic. Light is what
allows man to experience reality and interpret its beauty with our own
eyes, giving us the freedom to live appreciating its magnificence without
limiting life to a struggle for survival. Without light the world would be
a place of confused colourless masses because thanks to light we can
perceive colours, important elements that make reality seem like a painting
and transform ordinary shapes into works of art. From its brightness
colours are born and from colours beauty is born, this is the primary
characteristic of the reality man can perceive thanks to the brilliance and
pure energy of light; it is the fulcrum, the fifth element that gives
origin to the first four, passing through our eyes and reaching our
intellect allowing us to be aware of water, air, land and fire, all things
that without light would not exist in our sight. So let us close with a
quote from Plato: “We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark;
the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.”
