Q1 Where is Ravana’s Lanka now?

A1 Aditya Singh, Writer at Quora Dec 7

East of Maldives in the Indian Ocean, and the straight line drawn from
Kurukshetra and Ujjain (it too falls on the same longitude as Kurukshetra)
is the exact location of Lanka (the city once ruled by Kuvera and his
half-brother Ravana).

Valmiki Ramayana mentions in Sundara Khanda that the distance between
Rameshwaram (last land of Bharat varsha/ancient India) and Lanka is 100
Yojanas.

1 Yojana = 12.8 Km 100 Yojanas = 100 × 12.8 = 1280 Km

So 100 Yojanas is 1280 Km the exact distance between Rameshwaram (last
landmass of India) and Lanka (the city of Ravana).

This exactly is somewhere in the East of Maldives Island since the distance
between Maldives Island and Rameshwaram is 1205 Km (nearly to 1280 Km).

Also, Four tusked elephants and eight tusked elephants are mentioned in
Valmiki Ramayana which roamed in Lanka (the city of Ravana), which last
existed 11,700 years ago as per historical dating of species.

The name of four tusked elephants is Gomphothere which was lastly seen in
Pleistocene period (Ramayana war between Lord Rama and Ravana took place in
this Historical period in the year 12209 BCE or 14233 years ago = 12209 +
2024 which corresponds to Treta Yuga of Hindu cosmology)

Gomphotheres are an extinct group of proboscideans related to modern
elephants. First appearing in Africa during the Oligocene, they dispersed
into Eurasia and North America during the Miocene and arrived in South
America during the Pleistocene as part of the Great American Interchange.

So, Pleistocene period was the last time the Gomphotheres roamed which
lasted 11700 years ago.

The Pleistocene referred to colloquially as the Ice Age) is the geological
epoch that lasted from 2.58 million to 11,700 years ago

The events of Ramayana are at par with 12209 BCE (The Pleistocene period
between 2.58 million years to 11,700 years earlier).

My note- Dear friends, Happa, I got a QA perhaps appealing to my
criticizer, whom all of you know.

KR: The compiler is too late to reproduce what I had written about
Lanka and Lankavi, distance and era and the location, long ago, which
either he did not read or forgotten and also then, showed the right
position; so it is not going to be so appealing since Maldives is not the
right place sir. Also, many times I have even quoted the Valmiki Ramayana
verses also stating the tuskers of Lanka And what was the height of Rama
etc. The compiler does not respect the members and forgets so easily thus
when it strikes, he does repeat it with the height of ecstasy. SIR HAVE YOU
READ THE VALMIKI RAMAYANA KISHKINDHA KANTAM 88TH CHAP? IS THAT RAMESWARAM
100 YOJANA? Is Valmiki a no-knowledge person? What was the compiler basis
for his acceptance of an aviveka conclusion? Pl read well before you ink
and avoid your torching vexatious comments. I shall write that article
again Pl read tomorrow. And don’t repeat it again. K Rajaram IRS 2912 24

Q5 Can sleeping make you live longer?

A5 Larry Rafey, B.S. in Microbiology & Infectious Disease &
Microbial Genetics, American University (Graduated 1981)20h

Sleep deprived individuals can expect to live somewhat shorter life spans
and those who do actually sleep through the night (7 to 8 hours of
undrugged sleep!) can expect to life a bit longer.

Only 11% of people actually sleep through the night and, in fact, it is
perfectly natural to wake anywhere from one to three times at night. Taking
sleep meds only provides a twilight sleep which the brain does not consider
sleep. Melatonin induced sleep is also not interpreted by the brain as a
valid form of sleep and, although Melatonin can help people fall asleep,
it's not very effective for treating chronic insomnia or helping people
stay asleep.

I usually wake up once at night and then read a book for about an hour to
an hour and a half and then get some very restful follow up sleep
afterwards. I am in my eighth decade and that has been a lifelong habit
since childhood. Many of my forymer patients used to tell me stories of how
they would use the hour or two for catching up on house cleaning and the
like. So, use the time productively and avoid drugs.

BTW: I should add here that sleeping over 9 hours is detrimental to one’s
health unless you are recovering from an illness.

KR: Sleep apnoea is different from sleep deprivation under certain
circumstances, due loss in family, economic pressure and small problems,
happening sometimes in life. Sleep deprivation will not cause the death;
but that may trigger the heart, brain etc, at times, leading to death; it
means sleep deprivation may also be a cause of death directly or indirectly
but so far, no crime reports and death reports spoke, death due to
sleeplessness. In the months of March, I have worked continuously without
sleep for 3 days. And as diabetic or even healthier, people may wake up
once in the night and go back to sleep. Really no one sleeps for 5 0r 6 or
7 or 8 or 9 hrs as a dead wood since REM happens only for 2 to few hrs
which is deep sleep. Resting is important for the body. And nothing will go
wrong if you sleep for 9 hrs also. There were days in my 20s waking up only
by 11 or 12 noon. Rest is important and sleep makes the parts of the body
refurbish. It all depends.

Q2 Most roads on mountains are curved. Why can't a road be built
straight up a mountain?

A2 Luca Guala, Ph.D. in Transportation Engineering &
Transportation Economics, University of Cagliari (Graduated 2000) Updated 4y

When I studied road construction at University, many many years ago, the
professor told us this story:

In the old times, when a road had to be built up a hill, the team of
prospector would lead a donkey or a mule up the incline. *The donkey would
not go straight up along the shortest route, but would instinctively follow
a path with a moderate incline, or grade, very similar to the maximum grade
considered safe for roads (8 to 10%).*

The prospectors would hammer stakes in the ground after the donkey and then
measure the position of the stakes, draw all the points on a map and start
drawing the road profile after joining the dots.

When the prospectors felt that the donkey had gone too far from the desired
direction, or when an obstacle was met, they would turn the donkey around
and it would continue climbing in the opposite direction with the same
incline. The point where the donkey changed direction would be the location
of a hairpin turn.

A powerful car with adequate gear ratios (and adequate grip) can go up a
very steep incline but a loaded freight vehicle or a bus full of passengers
cannot. As many have pointed out in their answers, going downhill on a very
steep incline can be extremely dangerous.

An incline, or grade of 8% is considered the limit for a major road. For
short distances, 10% 15% and even 20% grades can be considered acceptable
on minor roads, but must be accompanied by adequate signage.

Some very exceptional grades exist on some mountain roads, but I would not
want to travel with a truck on such a road:

EDIT: Note that “grade” and “angle” of a slope are two different measures
since “grade” indicates how much one climbs given a certain distance
travelled in horizontal.

For example, if you travel 1000 m (1 km) in a horizontal direction and at
the same time climb 100 m, then the grade would be:

100 m/ 1000 m = 1/10 or 10%

One good thing of expressing the rate of climb this way is that it is
independent from the unit of distance that you use, as long as it is the
same for horizontal and vertical distances. If you measure horizontal
distance and climb in miles you will reach the same result as when using
metric units (but not if you measure distance in miles and climb in feet!)

A grade of 10% corresponds to an angle of about 6° and a grade of 50%
corresponds to an angle of 27°. A slope with an angle of 45° would have a
grade of 100%

Those who are keen on trigonometry, or who have recollections of it from
school, will recognize that the “grade” is equivalent to the “tangent” of
an angle, apart from the unit, which for the trigonometrical tangent is a
pure number, while grades are expressed in percent (%) or per-thousand
(used in railway engineering, where grades are very small) to get rid of
decimals.

My NOTE- Donkey or mule walking principle is followed in building roads on
hills is an easy way of remembering the curve/gradient. So I included the
QA.

The first time I travelled to Kalpetta/Wayanad, I was afraid to know, with
9 hairpin bends we would reach the top from Ativaram. However after
Vythiri I could not feel I was riding on the top of a Hill. Nostalgia

Q3 What joke will make one burst into laughter for at least 30
seconds?

A3 SapınaKadarKemalistTürk, Nov 12

*My note-UA joke- Please read with a mind to enjoy jokes*

The king of a faraway land had a favourite donkey. He really liked that
animal.

One day, his donkey got severe depression and became very sad. No doctor
could fix him.

The king announced he would make whoever made his donkey happy again a
billionaire.

A guy came up and said give me 5 minutes in private and I will fix him.

So he goes in a private room with the donkey and just as he promised,
within 5 minutes the donkey is crazy with laughter.

The king got very curious and asked what the guy did. The guy said, “I
whispered in his ear that mine was bigger than his”.

The king was also laughing and thanks the guy, pays him and sends him off.

Now the donkey never shuts up. He is constantly laughing all day & night.
No one can stop him. No one can get any sleep in the palace.

The king calls this guy again and asks “Can you please make him shut up, no
one can get any rest”.

The guy says, ok give me 5 minutes in private with him. King agrees, the
guy goes in with the donkey in a private room and wham, the laughing stops
abruptly. When he comes out, the king asks, “what did you do, nobody could
stop his laughing before?”

The guy says “Remember last time I told him mine is bigger than his ?”

The King says “yes, and so ?”

The guy says “This time, I took it out and showed him”.

Q4 A lot of answers start with, "There is an old joke from the
the Soviet Union". Can you give us your best old joke from the Soviet Union?

A4 Steve Ingram, Studied Mathematics at New York University1y

A hotel. A room for four with four strangers.

Three of them soon open a bottle of vodka and proceed to get acquainted,
then drunk, then noisy, singing, and telling political jokes.

The fourth man desperately tries to get some sleep; finally, in frustration
he surreptitiously leaves the room, goes downstairs, and asks the lady
concierge to bring tea to Room 67 in ten minutes.

Then he returns and joins the party. Five minutes later, he bends to a
power outlet:

"Comrade Major, some tea to Room 67, please."

In a few minutes, there's a knock at the door, and in comes the lady
concierge with a tea tray. The room falls silent; the party dies a sudden
death, and the prankster finally gets to sleep.

The next morning he wakes up alone in the room.

Surprised, he runs downstairs and asks the concierge what happened to his
companions. "You don't need to know!" she answers.

“B-but ... but what about me?" asks the terrified fellow. 'Oh, you ...
well ... Comrade Major liked your tea gag a lot."
