Diplomacy is often described as the art of negotiation and building
relationships between nations, and both Indian and global diplomats have
made significant achievements through the years. Here are some notable
diplomatic successes, both by Indian diplomats and on the global stage:
Indian Diplomacy
Independence and Non-Alignment Movement (NAM):
Diplomats Involved: Jawaharlal Nehru, Krishna Menon
Achievement: Post-independence, India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal
Nehru played a crucial role in shaping India's foreign policy. He was a
leading figure in the formation of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) during
the Cold War, which allowed newly independent countries to remain neutral
and not align with either the U.S. or the Soviet Union. This movement
helped assert the sovereignty of many nations and maintain peace during a
highly polarized era.
Non-alignment allowed our nation to advance so tall in the world though had
several set backs from china nas Pakistan. Maybe it is predicted to day
that India will be the third powerful nation of the world by 2027.
Shimla Agreement (1972):
Diplomats Involved: Indira Gandhi (Prime Minister), P.N. Haksar
Achievement: Following the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, which led to the
creation of Bangladesh, India and Pakistan signed the Shimla Agreement. The
accord aimed to normalize relations between the two countries, maintain
peace, and resolve disputes bilaterally. It was a significant diplomatic
effort that shaped the post-war relationship between the two nations.
Pakistan could not raise further relationship with USA as it was once.
Reducing its status was the achievement. Pakistan flared up towards Kashmir
but that was a different issue.
Nuclear Deal with the United States (2008):
Diplomats Involved: Dr. Manmohan Singh (Prime Minister), Shyam Saran, Ronen
Sen
Achievement: The India-U.S. Civil Nuclear Agreement was a landmark deal
that allowed India access to civilian nuclear technology and fuel from the
United States, despite not being a signatory to the Non-Proliferation
Treaty (NPT). This deal was seen as a major diplomatic victory for India,
solidifying its status as a responsible nuclear power and strengthening its
strategic partnership with the U.S.
International Yoga Day (2015):
Diplomats Involved: Narendra Modi (Prime Minister), Syed Akbaruddin
Achievement: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's proposal at the United Nations
to declare June 21 as International Yoga Day was accepted with overwhelming
support, with 177 nations co-sponsoring the resolution. This was a
significant diplomatic achievement, promoting India's cultural heritage on
a global scale.
Climate Diplomacy – International Solar Alliance (ISA):
Diplomats Involved: Narendra Modi (Prime Minister), S. Jaishankar
Achievement: India, in partnership with France, launched the International
Solar Alliance (ISA) in 2015. The ISA aims to promote solar energy in
developing countries, particularly those in the tropics, and has become a
major initiative in global climate diplomacy.
Global Diplomacy
Treaty of Versailles (1919):
Diplomats Involved: Woodrow Wilson (U.S. President), Georges Clemenceau
(France), David Lloyd George (U.K.)
Achievement: The Treaty of Versailles officially ended World War I,
imposing significant reparations and territorial losses on Germany. While
controversial, it was a monumental diplomatic effort that sought to prevent
further conflicts, although it ultimately laid the groundwork for World War
II.
United Nations Formation (1945):
Diplomats Involved: Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Joseph
Stalin, and representatives from over 50 nations
Achievement: The formation of the United Nations after World War II was one
of the most significant diplomatic achievements of the 20th century. The UN
was established to promote peace, security, and cooperation among nations,
and it continues to play a vital role in global governance.
Camp David Accords (1978):
Diplomats Involved: Jimmy Carter (U.S. President), Anwar Sadat
(Egypt), Menachem
Begin (Israel)
Achievement: The Camp David Accords led to the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty,
making Egypt the first Arab country to officially recognize Israel. This
was a landmark achievement in Middle Eastern diplomacy, though the broader
Arab-Israeli conflict remains unresolved.
Fall of the Berlin Wall (1989):
Diplomats Involved: Mikhail Gorbachev (USSR), Ronald Reagan (U.S.), Helmut
Kohl (Germany)
Achievement: The peaceful end of the Cold War and the subsequent
reunification of Germany were major diplomatic successes. The fall of the
Berlin Wall symbolized the end of decades of division in Europe and the
easing of tensions between the East and West.
Iran Nuclear Deal (2015):
Diplomats Involved: John Kerry (U.S.), Mohammad Javad Zarif (Iran),
Federica Mogherini (EU)
Achievement: The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was a
significant diplomatic agreement aimed at limiting Iran’s nuclear program
in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions. While the deal has faced
challenges, it represented a major effort in non-proliferation diplomacy.
These examples highlight how diplomacy has been crucial in shaping
international relations, resolving conflicts, and promoting cooperation
across the globe.
