" Or, oh, the husband is dear to the desire of the husband, but the husband is dear to the desire of the soul, Or, oh, the wife is dear to the wife for desire, but the wife is dear to the desire of the soul, Or, oh, sons are dear to the desire of sons, but sons are dear to the desire of the soul, Or is it not, oh, that wealth is dear to the desire of wealth, but wealth is dear to the desire of the soul, Or, O Brahman, is not Brahman dear to the desire of the Brahman, but Brahman is dear to the desire of the self, Or, O Kshatriya, is not the Kshatriya dear to the desire of the Kshatriya, but the Kshatriya dear to the desire of the self, Or, oh, the worlds are dear to the desire of the worlds, but the worlds are dear to the desire of the soul, Or, O Arjuna, the gods are dear to the desire of the gods, but the gods are dear to the desire of the soul, Or, O Arjuna, are not beings dear to the desire of beings, but beings dear to the desire of the soul, Or, O Arjuna, everything is dear to the desire of everyone, but everything is dear to the desire of the self, Or, O Maitreya, the Self is to be seen, heard, thought of, meditated upon, or of the Self, O Arjuna, by sight, hearing, intellect and knowledge; everything is known as fire. The gist of this whole verse is: "No one acts for a moment for anyone else's happiness and cannot do so even if he wants to, whatever he does or will do he acts solely for his own happiness" Anyone, husband, wife, mother, father, friend, son, daughter, or any relative!
