Once more than two years back, I along with a friend, was travelling in a public
bus in Delhi. It was DTC's route number 419 and thebus a little crowded.

We were two 17 year olds having a normal conversationabout random stuff perhaps
about exams or cricket or popular news.

Somewhere around ITO, my friend asked me, 'have you ever been pickpocketed ina
bus?'.

I answered thatfortunately I have not had the experience. I asked him whether
he had that experienceand he simply shook his head negatively.

Just as the next bus stop was about to come, we heard a man next tous talking
on phone. He was very angry over the person he was talking toand I smirked at
the choicest cuss words he used to decorate his conversation.

He got off on the next stop and I joked to my friendhow we might have a learnt
a few interesting words.

My friend told me that when he asked me that questionabout getting
pickpocketed, that man(who got off at the stop) was actuallyreaching into his
pocket and upon hearing that question he quickly moved outhis hand and
distanced himself.

I was stunned by my friend's presence of mind whichsaved his pockets and
avoided an ugly confrontation.

This story isabout famous Queen Victoria. This is a very rare but very effective
human trait whichonly true leaders can demonstrate.

Queen Victoriawas once at a diplomatic reception in London. The guest of honour
was African Cheiftan. Allwent well during the meal until, at the end, finger
bowls were served.

The guest of honour had never seen a British fingerbowl and no one had thought
of briefing him beforehand about its purpose. So, he took the bowl in his
hands, lifted it to his mouth and drank its contents down.

For an instant, there was breathless silence amongthe British privileged guests
and then they began to whisper to one another.

However , they stopped when Queen Victoria silently tookher finger bowl in her
hands, lifted it and drank its contents. A moment later, 500 surprisedBritish
Ladies and Gentlemen simultaneously drank the contents of their ownfinger bowls.

It was the queen’s uncommon courtesy that guarded herguest from a great
embarrassment.

*MORAL*: While the most common human trait is to lookfor chances to humiliate
someone else or to be neutral when they make amistake, it takes presence of
mind and an uncommon courtesy to follow someoneelse’s mistake in order to guard
them from embarrassment.

As it is said, "To make people cry is easy; to make them laugh is difficult; to
make them think mindfully isimpossible".

After all, *presence of mind is the reward oftolerance and the essence of true
leadership*.

Ramaiya was a poor banana seller somewhere in thedeep interiors of Tamil Nadu.
He stood everyday with bananas in this cart andsell it for the day to earn some
income.

One day raghav just happened to pass by him andthought of buying a few bananas.

Raghav: Anna, how much for the bananas?

Ramaiya: Its cheap sir, for Rs. 10 I would give you 5 ofthem.

Raghav: Not bad. Please pack for Rs. 10.

Ramaiya packed the bananas for raghav and raghavcouldn't hold back his
amazement when he counted 6 bananas instead of 5.

Raghav: Anna i guess by mistake you gave me 6. Ithink its 5 for Rs. 10.

Ramaiya: No sir,it is 6 only. Butif i say 6 at first, people start to bargain
and then they would ask 1 or 2extra bananas for Rs. 10. And that goes beyond my
profit margin. You did not bargain and i gaveyou the bananas for their real
cost.

Well, isn't ramaiya a good mixture of presence ofmind and honesty as well?

My note- It is very common in jewellery shops. The counter man work out andtell
the price. If you simply ask to prepare the bill, he will say, a discount is
offered now, workout the revised bill and bill will be given. They keepthe
reserve for bargaining customers. They will not get discount.

This happened when I was travelling in a local bus.

An uncle gave a₹100note to the conductor for the ticket of ₹35/- , to which the
conductor gave backthe change in denominations of 50+10+5, where the ₹50 note
was almost half-torn and the uncle refused totake it. Conductor was saying,“ I
take whatever kind of notes and you people won’t take them back”.

Slowly theconversation went into an altercation. After around 10 min a
co-passenger took that note fromuncle and gave another note which was in good
condition which settled thedispute.

Conductor: Now where do you want to go?

Co-passenger: Vinayak nagar

Conductor : Give ₹20

Guess what, he gave the same half-torn note to theconductor to which the
conductor couldn’t refuse to take as he said that he wouldaccept any kind of
note. :)
