May 2025
========
The accounted activities in May stand for 53:10 working hours and 14
commits (6 in libpcap, 2 in tcpdump and 6 in tcpdump-htdocs).
One direction of this work was assisting a contributor (John Thacker)
in the fixing of a previously reported libpcap bug (1508), which
required a dedicated test rig and turned out more convoluted than
originally expected, but eventually resolved as three related bug fixes.
Another direction was processing of a few unfinished prototypes from
the previous months: changes that were ready for merging have been
merged, potentially useful changes that require more work became three
draft pull requests in order to gather comments and to be decided later.
One small, but notable development was the introduction of suitable
ARCnet packet captures with the help from Burntisland Museum of
Communication (the working hours above do not include any time spent at
the museum). This is expected to simplify debugging, maintenance and
testing of the existing code specific to non-Ethernet-like networks
that can carry IPv4 traffic. The first results are two new detailed bug
reports and a formal specification of LINKTYPE_ARCNET_LINUX.
Other accounted activities include:
* posting of root cause analysis and other comments to earlier open bug
reports,
* re-opening of two old bug reports with comments,
* updating of the man pages and the web site,
* upgrading of openbsd-aarch64 and openbsd-amd64 OpenBSD from 7.6 to
7.7 (which upgraded Clang from 17.0 to 19.1),
* installation of security and other routine updates on various hosts,
and
* hardware maintenance and upgrade of linux-mips.
