This is correct you do not need to remove the card. You will not need to
turn off and on the phone either. Th Nokia phone will rebuild the directory
structure after it is done formatting the card. Note! If you are using a
NE66, C5 or some other phone that has the Nokia Maps on it and you are using
the free Nokia voice guidance! You may not be able to re-install the voices
initially! You may need to go in a delete some files off the C: drive of
your phone. I think the file is called MapsInstalled If you do not remove
this file first, you will not be able to put the voices back on your phone
after formatting the memory card.

No you do not have to remove the card as part of the formatting process.

Subject: [Talks] formatting memory card question
I want to format my 2GB memory card but retain certain files and apps. So
if
I copy what I want to keep to a folder on my PC and then format the card
can
I just turn my phone off and and restart it so the N86 can rebuild the
structure? Or, do I have to physically take the memory card out and put it
back in the phone for this to work. I ask this question because I have not
quite mastered how to open this phone easily.
