In a legacy-free system where you#d like to get rid of /etc/fstab i#d recommend: 1. in your initrd fsck the root fs first 2. then mount it in the initrd, and mount it writable right away 3. remove /etc/fstab 4. systemd-remount-fs will notice that the file is absent, and not do anything.
