OK, thanks to Miika I have figured out how to use the Ubuntu PPA on a Debian Jessie system...
Instead of using the method that Tim just posted about, instead I went with the slightly more manual version. The details were just posted to http://subsurface-divelog.org/2014/12/using-the-daily-binaries-on-debian-jessie/ The same method should work on a Debian Sid system, but will fail on stable aka Wheezy. Now all I need to figure out is that OpenSUSE thing for similar builds and we should be good to go for 4.3.
