Is there a opposite function: "maximize all windows and put the windows
where they were before."
I just did some testing, have you tried clicking again on the show
desktop button (or using again the show desktop keyboard shortcut, by
default ctrl-alt-d).
It did work for me and display back all windows as they were before,
even if I opened other windows in the while.
