I do not recommend you work around this and agree that it's a PHP 
issue.  However, I found reports of this problem in web searches so 
others have seen it. 

Might warrant a note in the readme and hopefully, the PHP team will 
identify a workaround.  The key point is that I don't think it should 
hold up the 1.5.20 release.
