It worked! Many thanks for your help. So I have now written my first 
Squirrelmail
plug-in and ... just because I was on a roll I wrote another one that works in 
the same
way - it uses fortune to add a "fortune cookie" to the end of the message. 
There used to
be such a plug-in but I haven't been able to find it. I used sigtag in the 
interim, but
sigtag doesn't use fortune.

Would other people perhaps be interested in my plug-in efforts?
