I don't think a PHP accelerator will help too much...but haven't tried one.

What will help is enabling server-side SORT in the squirrelmail configuration 
if the IMAP server supports it.  That's made the biggest difference for us.  
If the server can do any indexing, this will make a dramatic difference 
(Dovecot does a wonderful job of this).  If imapproxy can be installed to 
cache connections, this can help too.  If the server is using mbox, it would 
be very advantageous to switch to maildir.

It mostly comes down to the IMAP server, and enabling the various server-side 
options in squirrelmail config.  I can now load a page of 100 message out of 
>14000 in a folder, in thread-sorted view, in less than 1 second, while 
compiling stuff on the servers. :)
