We're using the uw-imap server package that ships with Redhat9.

Apart from the user clearing their Inbox, is there another way to speed
this up (e.g. turn off the summary pane?), or any other tricks to make
things a bit snappier.
Change the way your IMAP server stores the mail? Unfortunately you don't
specify which IMAP server and storage format you use, so it's hard to tell
if it is possible to optimise it.
