That looks like a UW version number to me. You might want to double check 
which package (UW, Courier, Cyrus, ...) you are using since that will make a 
difference.

If that is the server, start reading this: 
http://www.squirrelmail.org/wiki/en_US/UWLoginDisabled and 
http://www.washington.edu/imap/ to learn more about what your imap server can 
and cannot do.

I don't think uw-imap supports CRAM-MD5 or DIGEST-MD5 authentication at all 
because it uses the UNIX password file. This requires plain text login.

The error message has to do with the connection between the client 
(SquirrelMail) and your IMAP server. NOT the connection between your browser 
and the web server.
