Hmmm...
I have a question about courier-imap migration (I know this isn't the ideal list for this question, but it seems on topic)...
Can the migration to courier-imap be transparent to the users? I'm planning a move to courier-imap, and if it weren't for the IMAP path prefix setting in those using email clients to access their email, it seems like this would be possible. Is there a way to setup symbolic links or otherwise safely make the move from mbox to Maildir in a completely transparent way without having users change their email client settings?
Yes it is. You will need to take your mail server offline (briefly). As I
mentioned (below), there are numerious tools to convert from mbox to
maildir (just do a quick search in your favourite package database).
As long as the courier-imap (and pop) servers are listening on the same addresses as the old UW ones were, your clients probably won't notice a difference.
Right, I know how to convert from mbox to Maildir, that isn't the problem.
The problem is accommodating the "IMAP Path Prefix" setting in their mail clients (in my case, mostly OS X Mail). Right now, it is set to "mail" which is where apps like Pine and such store mbox mail folders. The Path Prefix setting needs to be set to "INBOX" to work with Maildir.
The question is, is there anyway that this can be done for them on the server side by setting up symbolic links? I've tried sym-linking ~/mail to ~/Maildir but this doesn't seem to work.
If there is no safe or reliable way to do this, I'll work with my clients to change this setting so that their folders show up correctly in their Mail client.
Does this make sense now?
