SquirrelMail is an IMAP client, i.e. you need an IMAP server for SquirrelMail to work. This server can be yours of someone elses. If you want to retrive e-mail from another server, IMAP or POP3 doesn't matter, SquirrelMail can do that, as long as you have an IMAP server to store the retrieved e-mail on. If you don't have an IMAP server at the branch office, every action in SquirrelMail is going to setup a call to the main office, which might not be a prefered behaviour. Since SquirrelMail is a client, mail will only be retrieved when the user asks for it, i.e. clicks a link, or you can configure SquirrelMail to automatically retreive e-mail when the user log in. But if you are going to use dialup to retreive e-mail, this might not be a preferable solution, since every user will setup a phone call to send and retreive his/hers e-mail. If you have many users you might want to set up an IMAP server at the branch office, and then have that server calling the main office automatically at set intervalls. Compare the costs for the two different solutions and let break even determine which solution to use. Sincerly, Fredrik. PS. I'm not an experienced admin, so you might want to get a second opinion. I take no responsibilty at all for any advice I give in this matter.
