OTOH, Dean, I can't see it being too difficult to talk the sysadmin into
installing a few basic plugins like spellcheck and filters.

As admin, the job of installing plugins is fairly simple unless the
installation has been heavily customized. In fact, Squirrelmail comes with
a few plugins already set-up, just needing to be turned on.

The documentation would have answered this readily. In order to install
plugins, you need write access to the plugins directory of the
SquirrelMail installation, as well as write access to the config.php file
(located in the 'config' directory, of course). If you don't want to edit
the config.php file directly and would like an easier time, you also need
Perl installed, and execute permission for conf.pl (also in 'config').

Plugins are for the entire installation.
