Even then, using POP as the primary mailbox access will not be available. 
For webmail, POP is purely inappropriate.  If you (the original poster)
have a server available (and since you're asking about SquirrelMail, I
assume you do), install an IMAP server.  Then set up fetchmail to poll the
POP server and deliver into your local IMAP.

Direct access to the maildir may come someday, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
