Could you specify what exactly is the structure of those mails? If I'm reading correct you expect from SquirrelMail that it's able to display a 80kb plain/text mail (that is possible) or plain/html mail. If it's plain/html you are talking about then you I have to dissapoint you. We are not capable in a html-sanitize (removal of dangerous tags) of a 80 kb mail within the default 30 seconds scripttimeout. Does the script die because of a timeout (check your error log)?
