I had these problems before as well. The cause was that I was using MySQL userprefs and the plugin that converts userprefs from flatfile to MySQL was inserting \n at the end of almost everything inserted into the prefval row. After disabling the plugin and removing \n from all the rows, the problem went away. The plugin in question is "Preferences convertor".
