Thanks for your reply. I am pretty sure PHP was not compiled (by me) with
the  --disable-session switch (unless this was the default).  We are not
running a 4.0.x version of PHP, running at least 4.1.2.

  session_write_close is a PHP function, included from PHP 4.0.4. You
  need to make sure you're using at least that version, and have not
  compiled PHP with the --disable-session switch.
