With UW-IMAP you have to create the folders in a special way to
allow folders to be stored underneath them. When creating a folder,
try adding a / on the end (or it might be the beginning I cannot
  remember). ie:

    Lists/

This forces the 'folder' to really be a directory as UW-IMAP stores
each mail in a single file, so if you have 50 emails in one 'folder'
you still only have 1 file. That file is named after the 'folder'
you created. For example if you created a folder called Friends,
you'd have a file in your mailbox folder (for UW-IMAP this is
normally your home folder) called Friends, inside that file would be
stored all your mail. However if you create your Friends box with a
/ on the end, you end up with a new folder in which you can store
  mail under. IE:

    Friends/Bob
    Friends/Fred

  Hope this helps
