It is about the only viable Single Sign On function available in the web 
browsers.

Other options are basically to allow the browser to store the proxy 
password in its key store (select that "Save password" checkbox in MSIE 
when logging in the first time).

Squid can not implement what is not available in the client software (the 
browser).
