then don't worry about cores. Use the collections API to create your collections.
Note: you use the ZkCli script to push configuration files up to ZK and give them a name, so you can have your "mcat" and "cat" configurations. Then when you create the collection, you tell it which set of configuration files to use. I _really_ suggest you slow down and read up on SolrCloud. It sounds like you're jumping ahead and trying to do this all the hard way. Understand the tools, particularly the Collections API and how ZooKeeper stores configuration sets and associates them with collections.
