Thanks, Mark! The core node names in the solr.xml in solr4.2 is great! Maybe in 4.3 it can be supported via API?
Also I am glad you mentioned in other post the chance to namespace zookeeper by adding a path to the end of the comma-delim zk hosts. That works out really well in our situation for having zk serve multiple amazon environments that go up and down independently of each other -- no issues w/ shared clusterstate.json or overseers.
